Weekly Review - October 26 to November 1
CRANBOURNE - 26 October 2020
SAINT MAHJONG cruised to the line in Heat 4 on Oct 26 (pink) to win ahead of ILOVETHEGAME who was impressive as a 2yo. She failed on debut as a 2yo at Moe after starting a $2 favourite - it was a Heavy9 track and she was spelled immediately so happy to forgive this ran as she’ll be much improved as a 3yo, as this jump out suggests. They gapped the rest of the field here too and ran good time so one to follow.
BOSSY CHLOE kicked away late in Heat 8 on Oct 26 (orange) to record an impressive 6-7L win over her closest rival. Immediately spelled after a debut 6th as a 2yo back in July, the now-3yo filly looked very comfortable throughout this heat and had the rest of the field off the bit over the concluding stages as she attacked the line hard. An impressive return.
Another runner who debuted earlier this year but was immediately spelled after. THE BLACK PANTHER debuted as a 3yo earlier this year, running a nice 4th when having to come from last (11th of 11) at the 800m. Now a 4yo, the Better Than Ready gelding returned in an Oct 12 jump out where very quietly ridden before a super jump out in Heat 9 on Oct 26 (red/white) where the winning margin could’ve easily been a lot more if given some more leeway by the jockey. Will be competitive in a maiden first up.
He was 3rd in a jump out on Aug 25 to Wise Counsel and Cambourne before a win over Saltpeter on Sep 15. The 3yo colt NOWITZKI clocked a super 59.65s for the 1000m in Heat 13 on Oct 26 (white). He did so in front of a race fit Oh Cecilia and has certainly put himself onto our watch list. It’s not everyday you see a Maher/Eustace runner at the Cranbourne jump outs.
TERANG - 26 October 2020
Liked the first jump out of MASTER BARTHOLDI on Sep 28 where we said we wanted another hit out before resuming. He was 2nd in Heat 4 on Oct 26 (green) to the 70-rated mare Merited with a nice gap back to the rest of the field over the 800m. Keen to follow him into his first up run.
OCEAN BEYOND is a half to Frankly Savvy (2 career starts for a 1st and a 2nd), both being from the mare Frankly who had a very consistent career when placing in all 11 career runs in NZ ranging from 1300m to 1600m. This son of Ocean Park looked super throughout Heat 5 on Oct 26 (red/white), jumping cleanly to take up the lead and win ahead of Touch of Paradise. The 3yo colt won a pair of jump outs on Jun 17 and Jun 29 as a 2yo and think he has above average talent…
ST ARNAUD - 26 October 2020
MOUNT MITTY a very impressive winner of Heat 3 on Oct 26 (white) over the 900m following on from a quiet Oct 14 jump out. The 4yo gelding had the 63-rated Boss Coni covered easily in this heat and it certainly won’t surprise to see him go on with it after an impressive second career prep that resulted in two wins from the four starts. Expect a BM64 first up.
Very impressive bit of work from the un-named Preusker runner under the breeding PENTIRE x MARTINI LASS who was a $70k purchase at the 2019 NZB Karaka sale’s. This colt jumped well but was hard held by Dean Holland in Heat 6 on Oct 26 (black) and over-racing for at least the first half of the heat. Once he got into a rhythm, he then started to look comfortable while leading to win while putting a big gap to 3rd. After also being 3rd in an Oct 19 jump out to Rock Tycoon (who bolted in first up at Swan Hill), one we are following.
Stepping out to the 1200m in Heat 7 on Oct 26 (white & black sleeves), HERE TO SHOCK again impressed and is a must watch first up. Will be better over a bit of distance so might be one we following deeper into the debut prep, especially being by Shocking from a Lonhro mare. Have loved his jump outs though.
BALLARAT - 27 October 2020
The most impressive runner of the two clockwise jump outs was the Matt Laurie’s trained RANVEER who won Heat 2 on Oct 27 (blue). The 2yo colt ran 48.60s compared to the 49.20s of Heat 1 won by the race Prince Amongst Men. Last year we saw Euphoric Summer bolt in in 49.03s, Soul Obsession beat The Big Easy in 48.96s and La Girl win in 48.45s. All of these runners have ran well and won since so the time by this colt is certainly slick. He had a couple of jump outs last month on Sep 16 and also on Sep 30 where he was a BIG winner over 600m. This could be a 2yo with some above average talent…
GEELONG - 28 October 2020
We mentioned NAVAL ENVOY from a Oct 14 jump out, and now he put together a big win over 1000m in Heat 1 on Oct 28 (blue). He’s absolutely flying and is a must watch first up with those blinkers back on. He’s destroying the fields in the jump outs.
INVINCIBLE MILLIE made up an incredible amount of ground in Heat 6 on Oct 28 after missing the start by a long long way. The 3yo missed the kick by a good 10L and wasn’t even on the screen for a majority of the heat, before coming back to the field late over the 1000m and doing it relatively easy. The daughter of I Am Invincible is a half-sister to multiple winner in WA, Revel. Must watch, would like to see her jump better in another jump out first.
PAKENHAM - 28 October 2020
ACROSS THE WAY broke her maiden at a massive $61 in only her second career start. Given a few more runs to the end prep included a 3rd in a BM64, she’s been given some more time and looked quite nice when winning Heat 5 on Oct 28 over the 1000m. She had Not Overly Plucked off the bit and chasing for a long way and look way superior. Would be keen to follow in a BM58 first up.
MORNINGTON - 28 October 2020
Hard to ignore DIVINE WIT after some nice jump outs. After a 4th on Sep 30 when he was overran late over 600m, the 3yo gelding has since won jump outs on Oct 14 and Heat 6 on Oct 28 over the 900m when leading from start to finish to win by 3L or so. Looks to have some speed, so expect him to lead on debut and be giving them something to chase.
An impressive jump out over 700m by FORBES, winning Heat 9 on Oct 28. The 2yo colt is a half-brother to Groundbreak and was a very expensive $750k purchase at the 2020 MM Gold Coast Yearling sales. He’s certainly showing glimpses of that price, also winning an Oct 14 jump out over 650m and is a colt we have to watch.
BALLARAT - 29 October 2020
We mentioned ZION after a nice May 8 jump out and we haven’t seen him since. He closed well in Heat 5 on Oct 29 (light blue) when 4th and just looks to be a really nice mover. Would like to see another jump out before resuming with that break he’s had.
FLEMINGTON - 30 October 2020
The eye-catchers from Heat 4 on Oct 30 were the two runners that made very good ground past the line. The first is AREE AL (blue with white/black sash) who settled last before coming wide in the straight and doing his best work late. The other was the un-raced PELORUS PRINCESS (navy blue) who travelled super wide throughout and was also doing her best work late. The 3yo filly looked very comfortable, following on from an Oct 16 jump out where she also looked very relaxed in the red head gear. A $280k purchase at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale’s, she is a must follow.
Really liked the jump out of the 2yo HOME AFFAIRS in Heat 5 on Oct 30 (black/white with purple sleeves). Only his first jump out, the colt looked to be poorly away before going wide while over-racing and clearly wanting to get on with it. He looked a big boy and despite being quite green under a strong hold, he attacked the line hard with the mouth open and could’ve easily rounded up the field. Very well bred, being a $875k half-brother to AYSAR who was 2nd in the Caulfield Guineas. Big watch.
Lovely jump out by the son of Ocean Park, LOVEPLANET in Heat 10 on Oct 30 (black/white with purple sleeves). The 3yo gelding travelled wide throughout and showed super late speed to go straight past those inside him and continually was putting a gap on the field the longer the jump out went on. This follows on from a Oct 16 jump out win when travelling super under a hold. He clearly had a bit on this field and has some talent.
