Weekly Review - May 18 to May 24

CRANBOURNE - 18 May 2020

WANTED MISS – R Griffiths

A different horse ever since the blinkers were put on. She was terrible in her first three runs when finishing 12th, 8th and 8th. The blinkers were applied, and she ran an improved race to finish 2nd before another poor 7th but she may have come to the end of her prep here 5th up. She’s had a break now and looks to have returned in good order, winning Heat 7 over 800m in front of the 69-rated Guess Again and did so quite comfortably.

OTHER NOTABLE RUNNERS AND JUMP OUTS:

Last week’s blackbooker, FUZZ BUZZ finished 2nd in Heat 6 where she led along the rails before being overrun late.

Nice win in Heat 4 by the 3yo filly MOLLYMOSA. The big baldy face was hard to miss in her first jump out back and is one to keep an eye on.

Nice jump out by NOT ENOUGH EFFORT for the new stable in Heat 10 over the 1000m in front of AL PASSEM in 2nd who also trialed well.

SANDOWN - 19 May 2020

CINDERELLA MAN – C McDonald

Fastest time of the morning by this 3yo Exceed And Excel gelding, winning Heat 7 in 47.53s. He looked quite big compared to the rest of the field, jumped well and went straight to the front to lead the whole way under light riding. He was pressured by a pushed out 2yo midway through the heat but responded when asked to extend further. He’s an interesting runner, having come down from NSW after an ordinary debut at an $81 SP. Might need to see one more hit out before he goes to the races to get a good idea of how he’s travelling.

OTHER NOTABLE RUNNERS AND JUMP OUTS:

We had GALAXY GHOST blackbooked from an Apr 7 jump out. He resumed off only the one jump out and was only 3.6L off a bm64 at a big $19 SP. He had excuses too, beginning poorly and over-racing. A mid-prep jump out off a freshen up, he took out Heat 1 (47.62s) in front of some very handy horses in super slick time including the recent Group 1 placed Bam’s On Fire in 2nd. He’ll take a lot of improvement into his second up run and we’ll be keen to follow him into it.

A couple of Maher & Eustace imports in DUBAI DOMINION and PRICE RANGE went to the line together in Heat 3 (48.08s) and did so nicely.

WARRNAMBOOL – 20 May 2020

OTHER NOTABLE RUNNERS AND JUMP OUTS:

Scratched before a race just last week, it was back to the jump outs for SALORSCI to keep up his fitness and he travelled super. He took out Heat 2 over the 900m, handling the synthetic track with ease. He’s just reaching peak fitness now and as he gets out to his preferred 1400-1600m distance, he’ll continue to be very competitive this preparation.

MORNINGTON – 20 May 2020

QUINTUS - J Warren

This 3yo Magnus gelding is no stranger to the jump outs, having had 5 of them including wins on Apr 8 and Apr 29, and 4th's on Mar 25 and Mar 18. He won Heat 2 (1:06.27s) over the 1000m, running the quickest time of the 4x synthetic heats this morning. He showed a nice turn of foot after settling at the rear of the small field and coming down the middle of the track to score. His debut looks close and could give it a shake.

OTHER NOTABLE RUNNERS AND JUMP OUTS:

Our past black booker, FUDGING, was disappointing on debut but had excuses having been fractious behind the barriers and travelling 4-5 wide with no cover the trip. Back to the jump outs in Heat 4 (1:07.11s) to tune up for a better performance second up. He was in the market on debut too, so happy to forgive and keep following.

FLEMINGTON - 22 May 2020

ARZANI (NZ) – D & B Hayes & T Dabernig

Really liked the jump out by this 3yo gelding in Heat 9 (48.03s). He settled behind the speed along the fence and was looking for a run in the straight. Got that run with 200m or so left and showed a nice late turn of foot to win and really extend past the line. Raced behind a very smart one in the now Group 2 winner Adelaide Ace last start. He’s travelling well prior to resuming.

OTHER NOTABLE RUNNERS AND JUMP OUTS:

HURRICANE FIGHTER went through the line hard in Heat 1 (48.30s) in front of some higher rated horses.

The Hayes import, BIOMETRIC made up a lot of ground in the straight of Heat 3 (48.19s) and was equal with the winner past the line. The winner SWORD OF MERCY did win quite well in good time. She’s only won 1 race in 12 starts but has consistently been there abouts.

A couple of 2yo's caught the eye and will be worth keeping safe when resuming/debuting, these being the half-brother to multiple Group 3 winning mare Dainty Tess, VOLUNTEER in Heat 4 (48.35s) as well as ZESTY BELLE in Heat 8 (47.82s) who finished under a strong hold out wide and BAHEERA who looked super when winning Heat 13 (47.88s) in nice time.
