Weekly Review - June 27 to July 3

CRANBOURNE - 27 June 2022

OTHER

The gelding looks to have flicked a switch for PRINCE OF CAIRO, taking out Heat 9 on Jun 27 over the 760m comfortably with a gap back to 2nd. The 2yo gelding was 2nd in last weeks Jun 20 jump out over 850m, going to the line behind All Black with a big gap back to 3rd place and the rest of the field. He was disappointing on debut when beaten 7L (at an SP of $7.50) but as mentioned, the gelding might have done the trick and this son of American Pharaoh has now put together two nice enough jump outs ahead of his resumption to suggest he can go well first up.

ULTRAVOX bolted in Heat 12 on Jun 27, while ex-BlackBooker TREOTTO cruised into 2nd, the 3yo gelding resuming from a 6-week freshen up. As we know, he finished 2nd on debut to Nice For What (who ran 3rd at Caulfield behind Inundation on Saturday) and a disappointing 4th second up, however, he did race 3-wide without cover that day while a post‑race endoscopy detected a degree of internal exercise‑induced pulmonary haemorrhage. He has shown too much talent at the jump outs to continue being a maiden.

BIE’RES won Heat 4 on Jun 28 impressively in slick time, closing well down the middle of the track to run over the top of Star Magic, who’s a nice enough 2yo colt that was last seen finishing 2nd to stablemate Yowie at Sandown. This daughter of Deep Field was a $160K purchase from the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and is a half-sister to Douceur, who’s a nice 3yo filly that was 2nd in the Group 1 VRC Oaks. Nice first jump out from this filly.

OTHER

Super keen to see the return of MRS CHRISSIE, a very impressive 4.5L winner on debut for us. The 3yo filly was 2nd in Heat 2 on Jun 29 behind the 84-rated Zipping Boy while ahead of Bless Her and Felicia in a nice return performance over 900m where they clocked the fastest time of the morning. Always had a nice opinion of her.

Big win by STAR HUMMA, taking out Heat 6 on Jun 29 over the 900m in the third fastest time of the morning. This wins back up her easy win on Jun 15 over 600m in the second fastest time of the morning that day. A daughter of Zoustar that was a $600k purchase from the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, she’s a half-sister to stablemates Humma Humma, Hummalong and Tycoon Humma, so plenty of talent in the family and the stable is clearly a big fan of the progeny of this mare. A filly to keep an eye on.

This was a massive win by LISIEUX in Heat 9 on Jun 29. She jumped cleanly but drifted back to a clear last by a 10L to the point where she wasn’t even on screen coming around the bend, but she showed a tremendous turn of foot to make up the entirety of the ground in the straight to somehow win by 1L. The 4yo mare has the benefit of race fitness, but this was a big win. She’s only 60-rated and won a BM58 first up by 2.2L, so would love to see her head back to a BM58 next start.

BALLARAT - 29 June 2022

OTHER

ENGLISH RIVIERA has a high cruising speed and that was certainly on show in her return jump out win in Heat 6 on Jun 29. The 2yo filly went straight to the front and led from start to finish under a strong hold. She’s obviously a talented filly, finishing 1.4L off the Blue Diamond in her last run but she is also still a maiden, so will be interesting to see where they go with her before ending up in town. Filly to follow.

FLEMINGTON - 1 July 2022

OTHER

NICOLINI VITO hit the line super in Heat 1 on Jul 1, winning in the fastest time of the morning but it was his work past the line where he opened up a huge gap on the field. He won a Jun 17 jump out impressively as well and looks to be flying ahead of his return to the races.

IVAN’S HERO looks a 2yo colt to monitor. He cruised out the back in a previous Jun 10 jump out before closing well under a hold late, running past Hoofs Don't Lie (since 3rd behind Thron Bone and Ghaanati at Caulfield) quite comfortably and finished a very close 2nd. He sat more on speed in Heat 2 on Jul 1, again cruising to the line and again finishing a close 2nd and also liked his work past the line. This son of Holler moves well.

KING TOMMY was fractious in the barriers at Ballarat and was scratched as a result. Heading back to the jump outs to head back to the races, he bolted in Heat 4 on Jul 1 in the fastest time of morning. His time today was the fifth fastest time of the past 189x jump outs on the synthetic track at Flemington, while his previous Jun 3 jump out is the ninth fastest time. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s just a jump and run jump out star or if it translates on race day.

ATMOSPHERE was absolution cruising as he won Heat 10 on Jul 1. The 2yo colt had the benefit of race fitness having had the two runs this prep, the latest finishing 3rd by 0.5L, but this was a lovely jump out nonetheless.

RANDWICK - 28 June 2022

HIGHLIGHT

Les Bridge look to have a nice 2yo gelding on his hands. We mentioned SPORTS LEGEND following his 4.99L win on Jun 14 where he clocked a slick 45.23s, noting he was a huge watch as a previous $200k Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling purchase from 2021 and he certainly furthered his credentials here. He stepped up to 1050m in Heat 3 on Jun 28 and won by 1.95L, clocking the fastest time of the morning, an easy 0.7s quicker than Forzanini earlier in the day. He did it over 780m first and now he’s done it again over 1050m, so he’s ready to head to the races and make a big debut, expecting Kerrin McEvoy to stick.

OTHER

Superb return trial from HELL I AM, winning Heat 10 on Jun 28 by 2.36L in the second fastest 736m time of the morning behind Leo and only 0.57s off the fastest 736m time we have recorded. The way in which he won wasomcertainly the most impressive part, jumping beautifully but electing to take a sit in the back half of the field while wide throughout. He showed a lovely turn of foot in the straight to go past the leaders with ease when only slightly asked for an effort from Hugh Bowman. A $150K 2021 MM Gold Coast Yearling purchase, this was a lovely return.
