Weekly Review - December 20 to December 26

Below is our Weekly Review of the Victorian Jump Outs and Trials in the week December 20 to December 26. the highlighted runners are (generally) horses that have jumped out well and caught our eye on multiple occasions, or horses that really (!) caught our eye. The horses under the ‘Other’ section are horses that have jumped out well on the sole occasion, horses that aren’t maidens that have jumped out well or other horses that we think are worth keeping in mind at their next start.

CRANBOURNE - 20 December 2021

Under his breeding, TREOTTO was a highlight runner following his Nov 1 jump out where he cruised to the line in 2nd (with a big gap to 3rd) just behind Masterful, who has since ran 4th, 3rd and 3rd in strong MDN’s. The 3rd horse was Rising who won by 5.2L first up at Stawell. His win in a jump out prior on Oct 18 was super as well. He had Hong Kong interest but those were obviously not actioned upon, which is why the 7-week let up. He returned to jump out in Heat 9 on Dec 20 as a tick over jump out to get him ready for his debut. He just cruised out wide and was never put under any pressure. Think he’s a smart colt. Very keen.

OTHER

Impressive first jump out for the 3yo filly MADAME DU GAST, closing well late to win Heat 5 on Dec 20. The Trevor Rogers horses can jump out well and not bring it to race day, so we’ll follow this filly into another jump out first.

JIPUSHI was always out the back in her first jump out on Dec 6, improving here to win Heat 7 on Dec 20 as she pulled away from the field alongside the talented Sharp Response. Time wise, it was the quickest 800m heat of the day so certainly good enough work to be one to keep in mind.

JUNKO was a big price on debut, finishing 2.2L off them in 4th and subsequently spelled. Thought her first jump out on Dec 13 was okay when 2nd, her jump out in Heat 9 on Dec 20 a lot better, winning in nice time for the morning with a little gap to 2nd. She’s owned by Mick Price but was a really cheap purchase, so it’ll interesting to see how she returns this preparation.

OUR JOHN BOY was too good in Heat 13 on Dec 20 over the 1000m, winning comfortably.

TERANG - 21 December 2021

OTHER

The Mick Price and Michael Kent owned THE BIG HEIST didn’t look out of place against some more experienced gallopers as the finished 2nd to Hint Of Mint in Heat 5 on Dec 21. Only his first jump out so keep an eye on him for another bit of work - he looked to have a nice big stride on him.

FINANCE CHOICE has been costly in his three career starts so far, beaten by 0.1L on debut before finishing 4th at $1.55 and then a disappointing 6th prior to a spell. Now with Tom Dabernig following the split from Lindsay Park, the now 3yo gelding returned to win Heat 6 on Dec 21 in the clear fastest 800m time of the morning in a nice bit of work. He’s a half-brother Group 1 sprinter Indian Pacific, being by Extreme Choice so there is no doubt about the talent in the family. Keeping an eye on him, especially into another jump out and then into a country maiden.

TUVALU has had 5 career starts for 3x wins (all by more than 2.5L) and 2x seconds. Those two seconds were both to I’m Thunderstruck… so there is no doubt about his form and talent. He wasn’t bustled about in his return jump out, finishing 2nd in Heat 8 on Dec 21 as he cruised to the line over the concluding stages. He’s an exciting 4yo and want to see where he can get to this preparation.

LET’S SEA was green, but his work over the concluding stages in Heat 10 on Dec 21 after being urged along was impressive. He was out the back, but once he got through he really exploded and ate up the margin that the leader had on him to get 2L or so. He was quiet in his Nov 22 jump out over 900m, stepping up to 1000m in this heat having come over from NZ with his latest run a 2nd over 1600m. He’ll probably get over more than a mile in Aus, but think he’s worth keeping in mind first up.

PAKENHAM - 21 December 2021

OTHER

Big win for the 3yo filly MOURN MAID in Heat 6 on Dec 21, clocking the third fastest time of the morning in the process. The Reward For Effort filly was 2nd in a Dec 7 jump out as well and looks to be one to keep in mind on debut.

MORNINGTON - 22 December 2021

No surprise to see PHILOSOPHER win another jump out impressively, as we’ve posted on Twitter a couple of times. He won his Dec 8 jump out in the fastest time of the morning, backing that up with an easy all the way win in Heat 4 on Dec 22, clocking the second fastest 900m time of the morning. He’s got a very friendly racing pattern, leading in both of his jump outs and even getting the head down in this jump out where he looked relaxed. He’s smart - Blue Diamond?

Several nice jump outs now for the 3yo colt PLACE OF GOLD but they’ve all been some time apart. His win in Heat 6 on Dec 22 marked his third trial or jump out win, jumping cleanly to take up the lead and never looked like being beat as he gave a kick around the bend, winning in the third fastest time of the morning. He’s also looked talented in his official trials on Aug 9 and Aug 30, where we mentioned him after both of these trials. Hoping he gets to the races now this preparation, he can certainly give a maiden a shake on debut.

OTHER

Expect an improved performance from RUSHEEN third up, having a jump out following his disappointing run as he took out Heat 1 on Dec 22. He resumed gelded this preparation, finishing 3rd to the smart Unflinching first up in a BM70 at a big price before a very disappointing run at his latest. Looked as though the blinkers went on here and he looked to be in good order. He can improve third up.

In the fastest 900m time of the morning, BLACK TOFF AFFAIR bolted in Heat 2 on Dec 22. Slick win.

He was green in his Dec 9 jump out, but the blinkers went on for ESTRAPAZ in Heat 5 on Dec 22 and they certainly looked to switch him on. He was away cleanly to get straight to the front along the rail and led from start to finish, quite comfortably in the end as he gave a kick away around the bend under minimal jockey pressure. Did it well.

BALLARAT - 23 December 2021

OTHER

CRACKHORN and the recent BM64 winner Cosmic Rhapsody went stride for stride as they closed from the back in Heat 4 on Dec 23, just missing Strike Eagle who led from start to finish. The 3yo gelding is resuming off a 12-week let up following three solid runs where he’s threatening to break his maiden.

XTRAVAGANT STAR has some speed, leading from start to finish to win Heat 6 on Dec 23 in a really slick 850m time, the fastest of the morning. The 2yo filly also won a Dec 14 in similar fashion and looks as though she can go well on debut.

Cruising to the line in 2nd place in Heat 6 on Dec 23 was the returning 3yo filly CHELOON, moving very smoothly in only her first jump out back following a disappointing debut on Boxing Day last year at Caulfield. She’s been given plenty of time and is one to follow into another jump out.

FLEMINGTON - 23 December 2021

OTHER

In typical Gai Waterhouse fashion, SALEM went straight to the front in Heat 6 on Dec 23 and led from start to finish, clocking the fastest time of the morning in the process. He had three runs as a late-2YO in June and July, getting Heavy tracks in his first two runs over 1200m before stepping up to 1600m and tiring late. This was his first jump out in VIC and it looked as though the blinkers have gone on now, which is certainly a positive gear change. Watch for another jump out, but we’d expect him to do much of the same there and in his return to the races.

There was something about the way JEWELLERY moved that caught our eye. She closed super to finish 2nd in a Dec 10 jump out, backing that up with a casual but smart win in Heat 7 on Dec 23. She’s a 2yo Lonhro filly out of a mare that was a Group 3 winner over 1600m herself. She looks to move well.

The work of the un-named Capitalist colt under the breeding CAPITALIST x TORAH past the line in Heat 8 on Dec 23 was eye catching. He was hard held throughout the heat as he sat in behind the leaders and speed, but his work once he got a gap in the straight (which was as they were crossing the line) was electric, he exploded to the front with ease and was a good 2L in front in a matter of strides. Super first jump out, huge watch.
