Weekly Review - August 30 to September 5

CRANBOURNE - 30 August 2021

TITANS super win. The 3yo took out Heat 9 on Aug 30 in very impressive fashion, clocking the third fastest time of the day in the process. He debuted as the $3.20 but was overrun late to finish 3rd before finishing 4th second up to See You In Spring. Returning gelded and with the blinkers on here, he looked a different horse, leading them up and then extending late under the guidance of Jye McNeil with a nice margin to 2nd. This is how you want them to win a trial upon returning, especially when it’s only their first trial. Very impressive and a must follow.

PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE is well bred and this was a nice jump out win, coming in Heat 12 on Aug 30. The 3yo filly was a $500k Inglis purchase and is out of Miss Judgement, making her a half-sibling to the multiple group-placed Missrock. She just cruised in this trial, settling midfield but very wide before powering home down the middle of the track. They didn’t break the clock but she looks to be a nice mover. We mentioned her after a quiet Aug 17 jump out and we think she’s a huge watch this spring. She’s nominated for the Thousand Guineas.

DENIRRA matched motors with The Billionaire in Heat 14 on Aug 30, a runner that has been quite handy since being gelded. He got out to a lead, but this 4yo mare just tracked him in the straight and looked as though she had a bit left in the tank as she kept up, gapping 3rd (being the 68-rated Teramia) by 5L in slick time for the day. She had a very quiet Aug 16 in 4th, but this was a really nice bit of work. Her last start 2nd to Arroance reads well now too, with that runner winning a BM64 in her next start. Think she’s a big watch this preparation, and with SP’s of $31 and $15, we might get a longer price.

Quite impressive from BEDFORD ESTATE in the end, pulling away late to win Heat 24 on Aug 30 over 1190m quite comfortably in the end. The 3yo colt was away slowly when ridden with no urgency, sitting in the back half of the field under a very strong hold from D Lane before getting some space in the straight and responding really well to some riding. He put them away pretty quickly here. Thought his Aug 17 jump out over only 800m was also classy despite it being well short of his best distance. A Tavistock colt out of an O’Reilly mare, suspect he’ll be better over a mile at least but certainly want to follow.

OTHER

BUTTER CHICKEN was super as she closed from last to win Heat 2 on Aug 30, clocking the fastest 1190m time on a day that featured some smart spring horses. A very impressive return from the lightly raced 4yo, very keen to see where she resumes as she’s a mare who will likely feature in some nice spring races.

The consistent BRAZEN SONG was a classy winner of Heat 5 on Aug 30. Would love to see this mare pop up in a BM70 first up, having had a very consistent campaign last preparation. Friendly racing pattern as she’ll settle in the first couple, makes her an attractive one to follow first up if she does go to a BM70, especially a mid-week BM70 first.

Whipcracker Way won Heat 6 on Aug 30 in a very slick time (second fastest of the day), but it was the 2nd placed RAVEN’S BLAZE who looked more comfortable and was only 0.5L behind with a huge 5L gap to 3rd. The 7yo had a race fitness edge but still a nice bit of work. Wonder what price she comes up as in a BM70 (maybe a BM64) next start?

PHASE TWO showed his speed again, finishing 2nd in Heat 8 on Aug 30. He’s going to take some catching on debut, but it was the winner who ran over him, PLACE OF GOLD, who looks like he might have a bit of talent. He sat just outside Phase Two, travelled comfortably throughout and then showed a really nice turn of foot under the hands and heels of D Lane to come over the top to win.

Luke Currie just sat motionless on FROM PANTHERLAND on the inside to finish 3rd in Heat 8 on Aug 30. This backs up his Aug 16 jump out win and with debut form behind Najmaty and Hunnam (when a 3.45L 4th), he looks to be one that we must keep in mind.

TYCOON HUMMA clocked the fastest time of the day and won by 8L in Heat 10 on Aug 30 but she does have the benefit of two runs this preparation, so not reading too much into this. It was a nice win, but she had a big edge on the rest of this field.

SUSSEX ROYAL jumped out well heading into her debut campaign but was poor. Tipped out, she returned with a quiet jump out (when 10th of 10) before taking out Heat 19 on Aug 20 by 3L. Maybe goes better on the wet tracks?

CAULFIELD - 31 August 2021

We mentioned BEAUKATI as a 2yo following some nice jump outs on Apr 27 and May 11 (pink). She was put away for a short spell, returning Aug 17 where she again showed heaps of speed to lead but was overran late to finish 2nd to Star Midfielder (since 3rd MDN). Hard to be more impressed than her 2nd in Heat 2 on Aug 31 to Dosh. Dosh was too speedy early, but this 3yo filly 2-3L off her before being asked for an effort late and really closing that margin to only just finish 2nd as the 69-rated Beltoro was the only other one really making ground late - not to mention, she would’ve clearly won any other heat due to how quick this heat was. As mentioned previously, she’s a half-sister to Saltpeter, Flostar and Magnatti and was a $120k purchase at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Huge watch on debut.

OTHER

FAKE LOVE was way too speedy as she took out Heat 1 on Aug 31, although the time was only the 4th quickest of the 6x heats.

DOSH is certainly back in good order, winning Heat 2 on Aug 31 (black) in the clear fastest time of the morning. She had tons of speed here, leading from start to finish.

PAKENHAM - 31 August 2021

OTHER

MELODEON is travelling well - she was 2.3L off a BM78 at Caulfield (when held up for a run) first up before being 2.9L off a BM70 at Moonee Valley when coming from last and clocking the races fastest L800m/600m/400m and then pulling up with a slow recovery at Flemington. Given a freshen, she returned to take out Heat 2 on Aug 31 with ease and would love to see her pop up in a country BM70 rather than in town.

Putting a big watch on the winner of Heat 8 on Aug 31, the Shane Stockdale runner under the breeding PALENTINO x DOWAGER GIRL (NZ). The colt was 2nd to Blistering on Apr 13 who was 4L off Gimmie Par on debut.

BENDIGO - 31 August 2021

OTHER

Backing LADY ZOFFANY in a 1000m maiden at a big price on the back of a big win in Heat 4 on Aug 31. Want to see her jump and go straight to the front and force them to chase her down. She was a 1.7L 3rd first up at Warracknabeal at $17 and don’t see why she can’t do similar here off a let up.

The grey STAR HONOUR was a very impressive winner Heat 8 on Aug 31. The 3yo filly began well but was given no urgency to get going and settled a clear last, beaten for a bit of pace early but she more than made up for that in the straight. Over the final 400m, she popped out down the middle and was given a push and responded well to win by a good 3L in the end. She was 3rd to Gloved (since 2nd MDN) on Aug 17 and looks to be one to keep an eye on.

BENALLA - 31 August 2021

OTHER

RAINBIEL another classy jump out win in Heat 1 on Aug 31 in the fastest time of the day for the 1000m. Really hoping for a BM78 or so first up before going back to Group races that she’s capable of winning.

Putting a watch on SOKKIES. The 4yo gelding was 2nd on Aug 23 and also 2nd in Heat 2 on Aug 31 to the 74-rated 5yo Prince Of Helena. Was $101 on debut back in June and was poor but the trial after was okay before the 10-week let up and returning for these two jump out 2nd’s. Not a stack of confidence, just a watch and a small spec at a big price.

ARARAT - 2 September 2021

OTHER

BOSS QUEEN was beaten a decent margin in an Aug 12 jump out but thought she worked home well into 3rd. Likewise in Heat 1 on Sep 2, the __ filly worked home well into 4th as she settled at the rear out wide early before powering home down the middle of the track under some really light riding. Liked the way she’s closed off the jump outs.

Had an opinion of WHITE STILETTOS prior to her debut as a 2yo, being a Written Tycoon filly out of Into The Mist who was a Group 2 winner over 1600m, but she was a bit disappointing. Returning here in Heat 5 on Sep 2, the now 3yo filly clocked the fastest 850m time of the morning (being 14x heats) where she travelled on speed but out very wide throughout before being asked for an effort in the straight and extending away. Expect to see the baldy face in another bit of work but this was an encouraging return.

Thought the way FEARENTLESS moved in Heat 7 on Sep 2 was super… the 3yo filly just sat midfield and was in cruise control where she finished 4th, never asked for an effort at any stage and made good ground past the line. Huge watch, she looks to move super.

Really impressive by DANDY CLASSIC with the 4yo mare jumping well to lead them to the bend in Heat 8 on Sep 2 before being given a push at the top of the straight and just putting them away to win by several lengths, hitting the line super hard. Only her first jump out back with a very encouraging bit of work, so hoping to see this replicated in another jump out.

Putting a watch on GOT THE STYLE, with the 4yo mare just cruising to the line in 3rd in Heat 11 on Sep 2. She’s by Snitzel and a half-sister to the Group 1 placed (and Group 2 winning) mare Xilong as well as Pierro Belle. Only her first jump out.

FLEMINGTON - 3 September 2021

Expecting DIO to be on a Guineas path, especially with his breeding as a full-brother to Sunlight. Had a really nice Aug 26 trial at Rosehill in the fastest of the day behind Nature Strip and come down to VIC with a super win in Heat 7 on Sep 3 (orange). He was poor in a Group 2 on debut but his last start 2nd to Scorched Earth (where they gapped 3rd by 3L) reads well now. He’s a real nice mover and hoping he pops up in a weaker mid-week race before going into town.

OTHER

VILLADEN closed well from the back in a trial in NSW on Jul 9 over 1050m, making the trip down to VIC with a jump out win in Heat 1 on Sep 3 (black and white with purple sleeves) with the 3yo gelding having a nice run along the rail and holding off Office Jim with Stay Gold out wide. He was a $220k purchase and is a full-brother to the very talented Young Werther and could be on a Derby path himself…

Following CHART BUSTER after a hard held Aug 20 synthetic jump out and his 2nd in Heat 5 on Sep 3. He has only had the 1 start as a gelding, a 4th at Sandown over 1300m where he wasn’t disgraced. He can go alright in a maiden first up.

It was only GRINZINGER PRINCE’s first jump out back for the new Danny O’Brien stable, cruising to the line out wide alongside Ingratiating in Heat 5 on Sep 3.

Check for the blinkers going on LADY AUDREY next start, they went on in her jump out win in Heat 8 on Sep 3 (pink) in the fastest time of the morning - she did have race fitness though. Ran into a nice one first up when 3rd but she was poor last start. Expecting decent odds but this is a positive gear change and jump out.
