Weekly Review - April 24 to April 30

CRANBOURNE - 24 April 2023

WATCHLIST

Superb jump out win for QUEEN OF THE GREEN, her white baldy face flying down the outside fence to get up and win Heat 7 on Apr 24 in very impressive fashion. The 4yo mare is back in good order and only her first jump out back in her second career prep, so plenty of improvement still to come.

Another jump out win for the recently gelded IMMORTALITY, taking out Heat 8 on Apr 24 to back up his previous Apr 11 win. He’s been put under some slight pressure in both of his jump outs, which is a positive considering he’s had 78-weeks off since his debut performance as an early 2yo and like the fact that he’s responding to the riding and finishing off his jump outs. He can run well first up as a 3yo.

CORTES is back and in good order following his spell and gelding, winning Heat 9 on Apr 24 quite comfortably as the jockey asked him to extend late, in which he did. We mentioned him following his Apr 11 jump out where he just cruised to the line so it’s certainly good to see him given a bit more of a hit out here and that will really bring him on for his first up run. A $250k purchase, connections will be certainly hoping he can live to that price tag and on the back of these, he certainly has a maiden win him early this prep.

BANGHOLME is another from Heat 9 on Apr 24 that we think is worth following. He ran 2nd on debut to Smile And Wave at a nice price, that galloper then winning a CL1 at her next start by 2L to frank the form. He’s cruised to the line in both of his jump outs and been relatively well held and quiet, but think he can run a cheeky race first up as he did on debut.

BETTER LINK is the older brother of the one time Blue Diamond favourite in The Instructor and looked as though he had some talent himself as he cruised to the line in 2nd place in Heat 10 on Apr 24. It’s only his first career jump out so one to keep an eye on.

The I Am Invincible colt in KINGWELL cruised to the line in Heat 11 on Apr 24, his first jump out this preparation and a really nice bit of work having never been put under pressure. Looking at his breeding, he was a $550k purchase for Mick Price back in 2021 and is a half-brother to the superstar Extreme Choice, so no shortage of talent in his family and he’s a huge watch into another jump out prior to his debut.

DOWN LOW is back in super order. The 2yo daughter of Deep Field just cruised out the back in a synthetic jump out on Apr 17 but if you watch past the line, that’s where she’s doing her best work. There was no hiding her in her work in Heat 12 on Apr 24 as she idled up along the outside to then be asked for an effort around the 200m, responding and really attacking the line and recording quite a dominate victory in the end. Seamus Mills paid $200k for this filly and although she wasn’t great on debut, she’s been given time and looks to have improved now into her second prep.

Visually, you couldn’t ask for much more from MIRAVAL ROSE as she kicked away for an effortless victory in Heat 14 on Apr 24 having led throughout but doing it very easily under minimal pressure. She’s by Grunt and a half-sister to Breaking Ground, who has been kind to us in the past so here’s hoping this younger 2yo filly can do similar for us. She’s one to monitor.

We couldn’t see SAMANGU in her first jump out due to the fog, but she was on show in Heat 15 on Apr 24 as she won very impressively over the 800m down the outside of the track. The 2yo daughter of Written By had a beautiful run up and speed throughout but showed some nice late speed as she sprinted away over the concluding stages, really attacking the line. A $200k Inglis purchase, she looks a nice mover.

WODONGA - 24 April 2023

WATCHLIST

PROJETO put in a big 5.5L win back on Dec 13 where he led and put a space on them late, clocking the third fastest 900m time of the morning in the process while the 2nd and 3rd horses from this jump out have since broken their maidens. Given time, he returned in Heat 12 on Apr 24 and it was much of the same again, leading throughout before then kicking away and recording a big win in solid time for the morning. This 3yo son of Master Of Design looks to have some speed so one to keep a very close eye on.

MORTLAKE - 24 April 2023

A third jump out now for SIERRA DE GREDOS and would expect him to be hard to beat wherever he goes. We were very keen to follow him following his Apr 17 jump out where he finished 2nd to Our Playboy but was making very good ground late. He was away well in Heat 8 on Apr 24 but was restrained in the early stages to take up a trailing position out the back, doing his best work in the straight as he got the gaps and extended when asked, closing over the top of the leaders to win over the 1000m in average time for the morning. Expect to see this son of Almanzor over 1400m first up and getting over further the deeper he gets into the prep and think we can follow him.

WATCHLIST

LOOSE ON GIN was solid on debut when leading and was good again in Heat 7 on Apr 24 over the 1000m in similar circumstances, but kicking away late to hold on and win in nice time for the morning. He was 2nd on debut to Tumbling who then ran 4th in a Group 3 in NSW, which is nice form on the board and think wherever he goes second up, he will likely lead and be competitive.

PAKENHAM - 26 April 2023

WATCHLIST

Another jump out win for ZILZIE LAD, this coming over 1000m in Heat 4 on Apr 26 as he led throughout but was able to slightly extend away late. He was a solid winner of an Apr 11 jump out over 750m that caught the eye and we mentioned his debut prep form behind the likes of Skidamarink, Lady Di Di and Twin Perfection on debut and then Morpheus Bragi second up, both of which should stack up in most maidens. A $360k buy, he should be running well first up this prep.

MORNINGTON - 26 April 2023

WATCHLIST

It wasn’t the same super jump out from LOVE TONIGHT in Heat 5 on Apr 26, the 3yo filly having to be hard ridden for much of the final stages and she didn’t really show any big turn of foot as she’s threatened to show in the past, which is a bit disappointing. We’ve always had a big opinion of her so this has poured some cold water but she’s still one to monitor, hopefully one more jump out prior to that debut.

SCREAM was super in Heat 7 on Apr 26, his first jump out this prep having made the switch to the Yargi yard and coming down from NSW. The 3yo gelding cruised when sitting outside the leader, never asked for an effort and going to the line with a lot to offer. He’s only 55-rated but we’ll watch him into another jump out before resuming.

NOT USUAL WITNESS was kept under wraps in his first jump out this prep on Apr 12 behind subsequent maiden winner Beour Bay, but he showed a superb turn of foot over the concluding stages of Heat 12 on Apr 26 to finish a very close 2nd, albeit over only 700m. This 3yo son of Star Witness has had the two jump outs this prep, both over 700m where we usually like to see some work over a bit further. Regardless, think he looks to be a nice mover that can run well on debut if he doesn’t have another bit of work prior.

SEYMOUR - 28 April 2023

WATCHLIST

Unsure why DIVAZOU hasn’t got to the races yet considering he’s now had 7x jump outs across 3-4 different preps and even more so, won his last 5x jump outs so not sure he can do much else. He bolted in Heat 2 on Apr 28 at Seymour in the fastest time of the morning over the 800m as he led throughout and then put a space on them as he was put under pressure late, albeit not beating anything of quality. A $130k purchase back in 2021, it was only his first jump out this prep so likely has another before debuting but as mentioned, he can’t do much more ahead of his debut (if it ever comes).

FLEMINGTON - 28 April 2023

WATCHLIST

The first two across the line are worth keeping an eye on.

GRAND LARCENY put in another good performance in Heat 5 on Apr 28 to back up his Apr 21 jump out as he did so from the front while relatively kept under wraps for most of the heat. He did a bit wrong in that first jump out as he was restrained, so it was good to see him relax a bit better as he was allowed to stride out in front and it was certainly good to see him strong through the line. He’s the half-brother of Yes Yes Yes that was a $800k buy and looks a nice moving colt.

SECRET STONES was plain on debut when 5th at Werribee and as a result was immediately tipped out. He returned for a quiet jump out on Apr 21 (yellow silks) where he left the gates in front but just cruised to the line under a hold throughout. He did similar in Heat 10 on Apr 28 (white silks) where he just cruised throughout on the inside, not put under any pressure and doing it really easy, clocking a slick time in the process. He looks to have come back improved for his second career prep (and race).
