PREVIEW
GENERAL BEAU was a super impressive winner at Flemington, winning by an easy 2.25L and largely untouched. FINANCE TYCOON and GUMMY BEAR (who has been gelded since that run) come out of the same race but they look very unlikely to turn the tables here.
Interestingly enough, Craig Williams was booked to ride UMGAWA last week in that 2yo race but the colt was scratched and Craig now jumps on board EXCELA BELLA instead for this race. That filly comes down from NSW after a nice trial win.
INGRATIATING first jump out was behind GENERAL BEAU and he was no match. His second jump out was behind UMGAWA where he finished a couple lengths behind over the 800m.
NAPLES jumped out on the same day as CLOUDY and ENUFF ALREADY with her heat almost one second quicker. She was well held in a field of four, however, none of her jump out rivals accepted to run in this race despite being visually ready to go?
VINLAGO had I AM WAR covered easily in their Sep 21 jump out over 600m. Vinlago was the quicker of the two 2yo heats on the day. The other 2yo heat winner (Greg Eurell Un-named) looked good winning the heat, but VINLAGO beat him comfortably on September 14.
OUR NUMBERS
It's hard not to be with GENERAL BEAU again after what he did on debut. He did everything right and was the ultimate professional, handling the straight perfectly. He will only come on from that, has the race experience edge over the debutants and was clearly better than the other two runner's that come from the race. He'll be hard to beat.
POST SCR - we had FAKE LOVE and NAPLES as the clear two dangers to GENERAL BEAU, both are now scratched and it just looks like GENERAL BEAU's race to lose. The next three behind all look like filling minor placings now.
We will respect the sole-NSW horse in the race with Craig Williams jumping on board. While the jump out wasn't special, it was a nice bit of work and we have to respect Waterhouse/Bott when they come down to NSW.
VINLAGO was our 5th pick, he now comes in as the 3rd selection after a very nice Cranbourne jump out. The big query is that experience up the straight as it is a lot different to the tight Cranbourne track. CLOUDY in as the fourth selection, think he is the pick of the Cummings runners and will have a ton of improvement to come after one nice jump out win up the straight.
VERDICT
Our initial play was in the early markets on TAB with GENERAL BEAU at $2.70 and then FAKE LOVE and NAPLES at $8.50. We had a main play of 6 units on GENERAL BEAU to win with savers of 1 unit on FAKE LOVE and 1 unit on NAPLES, taking advantage of the bonus back offers for finished 2nd and 3rd.
Happy to just have those units on GENERAL BEAU now, with that $2.70 around the $2.15-$2.30 mark depending on which bookie you used. He is the clear one to beat and we've got a good price here.
If you haven't backed yet, think he should start a $1.80 favourite - anything around $2 is great. Max bet.
RESULT / REVIEW
INGRATIATING (1st at $12 SP) certainly slipped under our radar, and it seems the radar of many after GENERAL BEAU was heavily backed to jump at a $1.50 SP. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be with our top selection finishing 2nd by 1L, but putting a massive 4.5L gap on 3rd and an even bigger 6.25L on 4th. These two clearly had a bit on this field.
