Race Preview - 2YO Darley Spring Preview

PREVIEW

It's always exciting to see the 2yo's return for the new racing season. There are first seasons Sires and new horses to watch and follow. You probably couldn't get a harder race to assess, as the field is obviously full of first starters. Those drawn closer to the fence will be highly advantaged. The starting point is that all horses improve massively off their first jump out. FINANCE TYCOON, GENERAL BEAU, GUMMY BEAR & INVINCIBILUS are the ones to have more than one jump out. Of them, GENERAL BEAU looked the best, especially when most recently up the straight being under a hold for the entire event. However, both Lindsay Park gallopers FINANCE TYCOON & INVINCIBILUS have the Winkers On, so you would be expecting further improvement off their respective jump outs. FINANCE TYCOON did match GENERAL BEAU in their first jump out on September 4.

We thought GENERAL CREEK, THE GLOBE and UMGAWA had the most potential to improve. They have only had one jump out, up the Flemington straight and would've improved significantly. They weren't disgraced either. THE GLOBE has the Winkers On, so you'd be expecting even more improvement with that gear change.

CAPITAL LEGEND & CHEER SQUAD both jumped out at Caulfield only once. They weren't impressive nor disappointing, and the 600m distance makes it hard to get a gauge. Grahame Begg did win this race last year with Mildred so his horse must be respected. HEY MICHAEL jumped out at Cranbourne over the 600m and it looked like more of an educational gallop than anything. He wasn't asked for an effort and faded late.

OUR NUMBERS

  1. GENERAL BEAU - M Ellerton & S Zahra

  2. FINANCE TYCOON - T Dabernig & B Hayes

  3. THE GLOBE - J Cummings

  4. GINGER CREEK - A & S Freedman

GENERAL BEAU was able to string together two nice jump outs, the latest up the straight and we feel as though that experience is the key. If you watch closely, he starts poorly but very quickly mustered the speed to win under a hold. FINANCE TYCOON has to be respected as he had General Beau covered in their first jump out but the straight jump out wasn't as pleasing to the eye. Winkers go on which is a big key to some more improvement.

THE GLOBE is probably bred for a bit further than this, but she looked alright up the straight. GINGER CREEK only had the one jump out and that was up the straight. He will have plenty of improvement to come...

VERDICT

We expect one of the winner's to be either GENERAL BEAU or FINANCE TYCOON, with plenty to learn from the race.

GENERAL BEAU has opened very short, around that $2.30 mark on TAB - hard to take that with so many unknowns. Would expect him to drift as we get closer to the race so hold off and hopefully can get closer to $3 come the jump. FINANCE TYCOON at that $5+ mark looks a good price to take, but GENERAL BEAU the main play with FINANCE TYCOON a bet for a small profit as a saver.

RESULTS / REVIEW

A very good result for our followers with our main play GENERAL BEAU (SP of $2.70 / $1.30) coming away with a pretty easy win in the end, ahead of our saver bet in FINANCE TYCOON (SP of $6.50 / $2.00). We also managed to get the trifecta (in order) with THE GLOBE finishing 3rd, paying a nice $48.30 on the S-TAB. A successful result for the first 2yo race of the 2020/21 season!
