BlackBook - Wednesday, 1 September 2021

Please see below for our #BlackBook runner comments for Wednesday, 1 September 2021. The runner's highlighted are our #BlackBook runners (the key runners of focus), while those included in the 'other' section of each race are additional runner's that have jumped out well enough to be worth noting.

SANDOWN - Race 1

#10 PROWLING (11) - G Eurell

PROWLING looked to move nice in only his first jump out this preparation. The gelding travelled lovely under a hold as he cruised to a win in Heat 16 on Aug 2. He was never asked for an effort but was pulling away late as he hit the line comfortably. He’s out of the mare Great Dame who only had 4 career starts for 2x wins and a 4L 4th in the Group 3 Vanity. Keeping a very close eye on him.

PROWLING backed up his Aug 2 win with another nice win, this time stepping out over 1000m in Heat 15 on Aug 16. He jumped well and travelled super on speed before he dropped the leader (who was ridden out and couldn’t keep up) and extended away to record a nice victory. He looked to do it effortlessly. He is a half-brother to the smart mare Great Duchess and looks like he might have similar talent. Must follow.

OTHER

The work of #2 BEAGLE past the line was super, attacking the line with a stack of pace to be in front past the line in Heat 13 on Aug 20. A beaten $2.10 favourite on debut, suspect he was tipped out and given a let up in preparation for a spring attack.

#4 DRAFT DAY was under a ridiculous hold as he went to the line in 2nd in Heat 8 on Aug 13 (black with white sleeves), but think he could’ve easily won this and clocked a quicker time if he was allowed to fully stride. He had 3x jump outs in June/July, which were probably just okay so with the winkers going on in this heat, we saw some nice improvement but he would’ve had some extra fitness with this being his fourth jump out.

The well bred 3yo colt #7 GROWL is travelling well at the jump outs, being by Written Tycoon out of the mare Vergara, a Group 3 winner that was also 4th in the Group 1 Doncaster over 1600m. He was very hard held on Jul 20 (orange), being allowed a little more room in Heat 6 on Aug 5 (light blue) as he took up the lead and travelled super throughout to win. He looks to have a bit of talent having also previously trailed well on Mar 9.

Really tough race to split, our four runners are currently the top four in the market.

GROWL has the race fitness edge and ran the meeting's fastest L800m/600m/400m/200m, but Extreme Flight came out and only managed 6th in an Echuca maiden. DRAFT DAY's latest jump out was super but the three before that were only fair, leaves a question mark around him with barrier 13 but D Oliver takes the ride. PROWLING's jump outs were nice and looks to have some talent along with Craig Williams riding.

Leaning to BEAGLE on top. The debut 2nd to Darceandermill reads well with that runner then running 3rd to Jigsaw at Caulfield - they gapped 3rd (being River Views) by 4L that day, that runner then won a 1400m race at Caulfield. He'll appreciate being on a Good track rather than the Heavy he copped on debut.

Putting our runners in order, gone with BEAGLE - PROWLING - GROWL - DRAFT DAY. Top pick is BEAGLE.

SANDOWN - Race 2

OTHER

All eyes on Direct in Heat 5 on Jul 20, but an un-raced 2yo filly #1 BELLUNA was 2nd and pretty much went to the line with him as well. The big grey looked to move just as well. Only her first jump out so one to keep an eye on.

She was absolutely smashed in betting the other week ($20+ into ~$5) but scratched. That jump out back in July is still the only bit of work we've publicly seen... she's also $201 into $51 for the Thousand Guineas on the back of 0 races and only that 1 jump out!

Looks a good E/W bet here, especially after the scratching of the favourite who was going to be very hard to beat. It's an open race now and happy to play at the nice odds.
