BlackBook - Sunday, 3 October 2021

Please see below for our #BlackBook runner comments for Sunday, 3 October 2021. The runner's highlighted are our #BlackBook runners (the key runners of focus), while those included in the 'other' section of each race are additional runner's that have jumped out well enough to be worth noting. Our figures and benchmark ratings are from PuntingForm.

BENDIGO - Race 2

#8 SPIRIT OF GAYLARD (9) - M Freedman

Had a note to keep an eye on SPIRIT OF GAYLARD following a May 11 jump out where he dropped back to last and closed very well despite having minimal room. He was never asked for an effort there and looked as if he could’ve exploded. Given a bit more time, he returned to finish 2nd in Heat 9 on Sep 7 over 800m where he sat midfield in behind the leaders before peeling off the fence in the straight and closing well again. The 3yo colt looks to have a really nice action and having finished 5th on debut at Flemington back as a 2yo, he might have some talent we’re yet to fully see yet. Love how he moves.

Big fan of SPIRIT OF GAYLARD, even more so his huge win in Heat 10 on Sep 21 over the 1000m. He was away well but elected to drop to the clear back of the field and take a sit. He was then given a push in the straight and would’ve made up close to 8L or so to come over the top of the leaders and win in slick time. This was a massive win. Super keen to follow him first up, he’s a talented colt.

BENDIGO - Race 3

#2 THINK JADE (6) - S Nichols

THINK JADE was the pick of Heat 18 on Sep 13. Beaten for speed early as he dropped back to a clear last, he came down the outside alongside Office Jim under minimal pressure and didn’t look out of place alongside horses that have broken their maiden. It’s only her first jump out back, but an encouraging bit of work.

THINK JADE was the pick of his Sep 13 jump out and the clear pick of Heat 9 on Sep 22. He was again beaten for speed early when dropping back to last but then coming around the field and bolting in by close to 10L. He didn’t do much in his first prep, but he couldn’t have been more impressive in his trials and jump outs ahead of his return. Potentially might need to get over 1400m, so we’ll follow him into his first up run and certainly follow him second up if he doesn’t break the maiden. Super bit of work here.

#4 RICK'S CAFE (20) - R Schiffer

After finishing 2nd on Sep 6, RICK’S CAFE stepped out again over 1000m in Heat 16 on Sep 20 and won well in the fastest time of the day, going to the line alongside the more experienced Mr Tipla and in front of some other better than maiden grade horses. The 6yo mare is very lightly raced, having only had the 2 starts back in 2020 when with K Hann but has made the stable switch now and think she is one to watch first up in a country maiden. Expecting a good price too so we can have a spec. Jumping out well enough to suggest she can be competitive.

BENDIGO - Race 4

#5 GOT THE STYLE (9) - T & C McEvoy

Putting a watch on GOT THE STYLE, with the 4yo mare just cruising to the line in 3rd in Heat 11 on Sep 2. She’s by Snitzel and a half-sister to the Group 1 placed (and Group 2 winning) mare Xilong as well as Pierro Belle. Only her first jump out.

We wanted to watch GOT THE STYLE after a Sep 2 jump out, but very happy to say she has talent and will be very competitive on debut after a super win in Heat 5 on Sep 15 in the fastest time of the morning. The 4yo mare jumped beautifully here, went straight to the lead and never looked like being beat as she won by a good margin. She looks to be a slick mover, being by Snitzel and a half-sister to the Group 1 placed (and Group 2 winning) mare Xilong. Keen to follow.

#10 EXPRESS MASTER (8) - T Nikolic

EXPRESS MASTER was the only one in the field of Heat 11 on Sep 13 who wasn’t pushed out by Beau Mertens, recording a comfortable 1.5L win in above average time for the morning. He potentially wasn’t quite ready to debut as a 2YO, being well supported at $4 but didn’t offer too much in the straight to finish 5th. He was immediately spelled, returning now (potentially being gelded) with two jump out wins with this win and his win on Aug 23. He looks a big gelding with a nice action and we’re happy to follow him into his resumption.

OTHER

Super return for #3 APSARA, taking out Heat 9 on Sep 7 over 800m in the clear fastest time of the day. Unseen as a 3yo, she was unlucky not to break her maiden as a 2yo in three career runs. Expecting another jump out for the now-4yo mare considering she’s resuming from a 71-week spell, regardless we must follow her.

He didn’t beat much at all, but #16 ROCK MY SOCKS OFF was the clear pick of the day as he lead from start to finish to win Heat 5 on Jul 21. Did it easily and never asked for an effort.

OUR THOUGHTS / BETS

Bendigo, Race 2 - SPIRIT OF GAYLARD

We think he is smart and should just be winning this. Monitor the price, the ~$1.80 looks amount right and not too bad to take but hoping he can get to $2+ closer to the jump.

Bendigo, Race 3 - THINK JADE & RICK'S CAFE

AUDRREY GIRL comes out of the race where Our Boy Bryan was 2nd and has since won at Moonee Valley on Friday night by close to 3L. FOTURI has been good without winning this prep, running into the smart Mornington Glory last start.

Those two deserve to be at the top of the market but we're happy to back both THINK JADE and RICK'S CAFE at nice prices. Hopefully we're all on at nice early market prices and deductions haven't hit us too badly.

As for current prices. RICK'S CAFE is more of a spec bet at the $34, but THINK JADE is a definite chance to win this (especially after scratchings) and is a nice E/W price at the $7/$2. Medium confidence for THINK JADE on an E/W basis and a small spec for RICK'S CAFE.

Bendigo, Race 4 - GOT THE STYLE & EXPRESS MASTER (APSARA & ROCK MY SOCKS OFF)

APSARA jumped out well but she only had the one jump out after over 500 days off and that jump out was four weeks ago now. GOT THE STYLE also jumped out well and deserves to be favourite, one of our past star performers.

We really liked the jump out of EXPRESS MASTER though and were happy to back him in early markets at $12.00/$3.60 and still think he's a good bet. Have him on top with GOT THE STYLE our second pick and APSARA third. Could look at exotics?

Big watch on ROCK MY SOCKS OFF though, who was extremely unlucky (should've certainly placed) on debut at a massive price. She's was an emergency with a terrible barrier but makes the field and we'll look to be on again - having a spec at the $26 available this morning.

To recap - favourites deserve to be favourites but we're going for a couple at some value and nice prices. Backing both EXPRESS MASTER (E/W at $10) and ROCK MY SOCKS OFF (at $26).
