BlackBook - Friday, 6 August 2021

Please see below for our #BlackBook runner comments for Friday, 6 August 2021. The runner's highlighted are our #BlackBook runners (the key runners of focus), while those included in the 'other' section of each race are additional runner's that have jumped out well enough to be worth noting. All NSW #BlackBook runners are 'other' runners.

BALLARAT - Race 1

OTHER

The import MR BRIGHTSIDE jumped out in a good field on Jun 4 (white) and wasn’t disgraced, returning for his second bit of work in Heat 16 (red) with a nice win in nice time for the day, running over the top of the field as he attacked the line. The 2nd horse #3 HEROIC CHIEF (blue) is a big watch first up. He was 2nd to subsequent group-placed Litchfield County on debut before running 3rd at $2.70. Looks as though he’s returned gelded here and this was a nice first bit of work. Must watch.

Has been entered twice at Morphetville with the meeting abandoned and then scratched. Was backed in to ~$4-$5 there. Didn't jump out with the blinkers here but has them on for raceday. Have him as the one to beat, hoping to get $3+.

BALLARAT - Race 2

#10 MIDNIGHT HUSSY (1) - C McDonald

Fair win by MIDNIGHT HUSSY. The 2yo filly showed incredible speed to take off in Heat 1 on Jul 20, lead and win by a huge margin in the fastest time of the morning. These kinds of wins can be worrying in that the horse doesn’t settle and that’s why it takes off, but she was well held and quietly ridden in a Jul 12 jump out at Cranbourne so don’t think this applies to her. It’s taking her a bit to get to the races though, with this being her fourth set of two jump outs. A $350k filly from the Inglish Melbourne Premier Yearling Sales, she looks to have some talent and look to be very speedy.

OTHER

#9 DEEP BLAST had a quiet Jul 2 jump out which was followed by a win in Heat 11 on Jul 9 (yellow) as the colt extended away in the straight as he was asked for an effort, responding to kick away and win. He’s worth keeping an eye on first up after these efforts.

Expecting (and backing) MIDNIGHT HUSSY to jump straight to the front from barrier 1 and be hard to chase down. Small saver on DEEP BLAST to breakeven.

BALLARAT - Race 3

OTHER

The 2yo #11 MADAME SOLARIO jumped out well behind the older horses, including Violinist, in Heat 4 on Jun 24 in her return to the jump outs after an unsuccessful debut campaign earlier in the year. She’s one to keep safe.

Didn't expect her to run here because of the barrier, but here she is and comes into barrier 12 after scratchings. Looks an E/W bet in a race that lacks some depth.

TAMWORTH - Race 4

#6 ONLY NEED TIME (2) - Kris Lees

Jul 22 (Newcastle) - this is how you want them winning a trial, just not sure on her form at all (it’s poor) - still, she jumped well but elected to take a sit behind the leaders - peeled wide in the straight and closed over the top to win by 2L with ease - would like to see another trial.

Haven't seen another trial, but that first trial was really nice with the 2nd horse (Belleofthehunter) since running 2nd in a MDN.

#5 OBEY (5) - Sam Kavanagh

Jul 7 (Muswellbrook) - jumped well, pushed forward out wide and came to outside rail - was given a slight rev up for only a couple strides and looked to be a nice mover - ran the fastest time of the morning and went on with it past the line with a nice L600m too.

Latest trial on Jul 28 was only fair - was given a push but couldn't get to Diwali Lights who won comfortably in the end.

Prefer to be on ONLY NEED TIME and saving on OBEY, but probably want a bit better than the ~$2.30 available. Hoping to get closer to $3 around the jump, but the play is back ONLY NEED TIME to win and save on OBEY at ~$10 to breakeven with a small profit.
