GEELONG - Race 3
#4 FIRST PLATOON (6) - D O'Brien
The Danny O’Brien owned and trained FIRST PLATOON looked professional wining Heat 3 on Mar 19 (navy blue). A well bred and expensive colt, a $625k buy at the Magic Millions sales being by Sebring out of a multiple-Group winning mare over 1400m and 1600m. After a pair of jump outs in 2020, the 2yo colt was taken to the front by D Oliver before settling well and cruising too and through the line, extending past the line under a hold. One worth following.
We blackbooked the $625k colt FIRST PLATOON after a Mar 19 win where he has since won a Mar 26 jump out and now a super trial win with the blinkers going on, coming in Heat 6 ahead of a fast finishing CARDIGAN QUEEN who has made a habit of getting back and running on in her jump outs, doing similar when 3rd on Mar 23.
#14 TRAMONTANA (5) - B & JD Hayes
TRAMONTANA looks to have made a nice return, winning a pair of jump outs on Jul 23 and Heat 1 on Aug 2 (white) where he sat on pace in both of these and was too strong late under minimal pressure. He was a little unlucky not to break his maiden already, finishing 2nd in his first two starts at short prices before going into town. Being a well bred colt as a half-brother to the multiple Group 1 winning star Trust In A Gust, this time off before his early 3yo season might do him plenty of good and we expect him to be quite competitive first up on the back of this bit of work. Mindful of price with his record, but one to follow regardless.
FIRST PLATOON's latest trial form ahead of Cardigan Queen reads well now - he's had more recent jump outs on Jul 23 behind the smart Heresy and Widaad as well as Aug 4, both without blinkers which he has on here for debut - Craig Williams rides and he looks to be quite smart with a nomination for the Caulfield Guineas. Looks a really nice E/W bet at $5+ / $2.
TRAMONTANA is a big chance here and looks the danger, but both his jump outs were on the synthetic.
GOLDEN MONKEY has the Kah factor and had a nice first up run behind Mynumerouno, but the jump outs before that debut weren't convincing. BRITISH COLUMBIA is hard to get a gauge on having been ridden very quiet in both jump outs.
Nice race - have FIRST PLATOON on top and happy to play at the $5.50 / $2 odds available.
GEELONG - Race 5
#11 RINNOVA (6) - M,W & J Hawkes
Very keen to follow RINNOVA into her return. Following on from her nice Jun 25 jump out that we highlighted, the 4yo mare sat on speed in Heat 5 on Jul 2 (orange), where she went to the line well held to win ahead of Thorogood and Mashrabiya in very slick time for the synthetic jump outs. She’ll go very close first up and is one we can also follow second up.
RINNOVA flew home on debut to just miss. The 4yo mare was 10th of 11 at the 400m mark and got home in the meetings fastest L400m and L200m to go down to Hinto Blue by only 0.1L. She was put away immediately, returning in Heat 7 on Jun 25 (orange) where she was always out the back but if you watch past the line, she really gets going late and all under her own steam to show that turn of foot. Want to follow her into her second career preparation.
RINNOVA was entered into a BM64 and was well backed into $4-$5 but was scratched at the gates. She has since won a Cranbourne jump out on Aug 2 and is the one to beat in this race but was hoping to get closer to $3 than $2.
