All the runner's below were initially highlighted in our Weekly Reviews as horses to follow after their jump out(s) and before they had accepted to their first up run. We have included our original blackbook comments, along with the jump out accompanying those comments. These runner's were either big winners (~2L+ or $10+ BSP) first up and/or second up and/or have gone on to win high quality races. Please note that this list does not include all the other 100+ winner's that did not win by over ~2L first or second up. All price's quoted are at the Betfair Starting Price (BSP).
PLACE OF GOLD - C Brown
First Up : 1st by 1.5L ($2.72 BSP)
PHASE TWO showed his speed again, finishing 2nd in Heat 8 on Aug 30. He’s going to take some catching on debut, but it was the winner who ran over him, PLACE OF GOLD, who looks like he might have a bit of talent. He sat just outside Phase Two, travelled comfortably throughout and then showed a really nice turn of foot under the hands and heels of D Lane to come over the top to win.
Several nice jump outs now for the 3yo colt PLACE OF GOLD but they’ve all been some time apart. His win in Heat 6 on Dec 22 marked his third trial or jump out win, jumping cleanly to take up the lead and never looked like being beat as he gave a kick around the bend, winning in the third fastest time of the morning. He’s also looked talented in his official trials on Aug 9 and Aug 30, where we mentioned him after both of these trials. Hoping he gets to the races now this preparation, he can certainly give a maiden a shake on debut.
IL BRACCIO - L McGill
First Up : 1st by 4.0L ($28.00 BSP)
Blackbook comments : IL BRACCIO is certainly one we should follow into his debut now. We mentioned him after a Nov 3 jump out over 800m where he won comfortably and that backed up his 600m Oct 20 jump out. We mentioned we wanted to see one more 800m+ jump out prior to his debut, and instead we got a 1000m trial, which is even better. He travelled well on speed in Heat 12 on Nov 23 and just cruised to the line under no pressure from Campbell Rawiller, going through the motions and moving well. Keen to follow him into a debut now.
A couple of talented 3yo gelding’s finished 1st and 2nd in Heat 4 on Dec 15. ALLGREEKTOME was 1st, defeating IL BRACCIO in 2nd by 3.5L and then a massive 6L gap back to 3rd, all while clocking the fastest 950m time of the morning in the process. IL BRACCIO is a past feature of our reviews and he did his credentials no harm with this performance. He’s had plenty of jump outs and trials now, so there will be no queries on his professionalism and fitness on debut, he just needs to head to the races now. Keen to follow him.
JACQUINOT - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 2.8L ($5.58 BSP)
Blackbook comments : JACQUINOT was the most impressive of the 2yo’s, taking out Heat 3 on Dec 6 in a very slick time that was ~1s quicker than the other two 2yo heats for the morning. The 2yo colt is out of an un-raced Pierro mare that’s a full-sister to the Group 2 winning Dragon Leap. This only being his first jump out, it was a nice bit of work.
JACQUINOT now can’t have been more impressive in his two jump outs. As mentioned last week, he took out a Dec 6 jump out in very slick time and has now backed that up with a very slick several length win in Heat 2 on Dec 13, again recording a nice time that was almost 2s quicker than the other 2YO heat on the day. He was passed in at $90k at the 2021 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sales with a reserve of $120k, out of an un-raced sister to some handy gallopers in Dragon Leap and the Group 1 winning Inference. He looks to be very talented and if he brings to the races anything like he’s been bringing to the jump outs, then we’d expect him to go well on debut.
GUARDIAN SPIRIT - A & S Freedman
First Up : 1st by 2.2L ($1.76 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Godolphin obviously had an opinion of GUARDIAN SPIRIT prior to his debut, his latest run being in the Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes after finishing 4th on debut behind some runners with nice subsequent form including Sandy Prince (2nd) and Forgot You (3rd). Spelled since, he returned with a nice Oct 20 jump out before closing very impressively in Heat 5 on Oct 27 out wide where he was quite comfortably in front past the line. Loved the way he responded to some urgings in the straight and really extended, making up ground quickly and hitting the line hard. Can follow him into his first up run in his second career preparation.
LIGHTHOUSE - C Maher & D Eustace
First Up : 1st by 4.0L ($4.70 BSP)
Blackbook comments : The USA import LIGHTHOUSE was an impressive winner of Heat 9 on Sep 27. It would’ve been hard to miss the big grey cruising throughout and extended to and through the line late. There is no profile for the horse though with nothing showing on Racing Australia either, so we’ll keep this runner in mind and keep checking for a profile to look further into.
Another nice jump out for the USA import LIGHTHOUSE, the 5yo mare taking out Heat 6 on Oct 18 well after travelling wide throughout. She does have a record of 9 starts for 3 wins and 3 placings with $480k of prize money, so she’s certainly not short on talent but looks to be moving well ahead of her Australian debut.
UNFLINCHING - A & S Freedman
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($2.61 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Lovely bit of work from the 3yo colt UNFLINCHING, closing well to finish a very close 2nd in Heat 16 on Oct 13. A son of I Am Invincible who was a $280k purchase from the MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he looked to be a nice mover once he got some clear room in the straight having over-raced for most of the first part of the jump out as he ran in restricted room. Only his first jump out, but we’re happy to follow him - expecting another jump out prior to debuting this prep.
Another nice jump out from UNFLINCHING, backing up his Oct 13 run with a win in Heat 7 on Oct 20. He left the gates well to get to the front with ease but got the head up a bit as the jockey took a strong hold. He was headed in the lead but cornered well and responded to some very slight urgings from the jockey to get back in front and hold on by a length or so in nice time for the day. As mentioned previously, he is a $280k I Am Invincible colt and looks to have some talent. The slight query is on him over-racing at the start, but think he’ll have enough talent to overcome this.
EXTREME WARRIOR - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 4.25L ($1.23 BSP)
Blackbook comments : We liked a pair of May jump outs by EXTREME WARRIOR, but he didn’t get to the races. Returning in Heat 8 on Sep 15 for his first jump out after another break, he looked a class above and showed he is a classy colt. The time wasn’t super, but it was a nice return none-the-less.
PINSTRIPED - E Jusufovic
First Up : 1st by 5.5L ($2.88 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Looks as though Enver might have another smart one on his hands. After winning an Aug 23 jump out over 800m, the 3yo colt under the breeding STREET BOSS x SNITZEL BLITZ was a class above as he cruised to a win in Heat 10 on Sep 6. He jumped beautifully, pushed forward whilst being heavily restrained and then was allowed a bit more room to gallop in the straight as he extended away from the field. He went to the line with another un-named Alderson horse, but they gapped 3rd massively and he was pulled up on the line. He looks to move really well, very keen to see where he goes on debut.
Keen on PINSTRIPED. He featured in our reviews under his breeding Street Boss x Snitzel Blitz, but the 3yo colt now has a name and another impressive jump out win to add to his form. He won Heat 5 on Sep 20 in the fastest time of morning to back up his Aug 23 and Sep 6 wins, this heat the most impressive of the three as he went to the line and defeated Hungry Heart’s little brother Duty Dynasty, a 3yo colt who already has a win to his name and some residual race fitness coming off only a 10 week let up. Confident he will run a big race on debut.
SHARWIN - A & S Freedman
First Up : 1st by 2.25L ($6.44 BSP)
Blackbook comments : SHARWIN has been scratched multiple times over the past week or so, returning to the jump outs in Heat 6 on Sep 22 to tick the legs over and she’s absolutely bolted in by a massive margin. She jumped straight to the front here with super gate speed and gave nothing else a chance, leading from start to finish. We didn’t have her as a Blackbook this prep after Aug 11 and Aug 25 jump outs (until now), but did have her down after Apr 1 and Apr 16 jump out. She now looks primed for a debut and we’e keen to follow her into the run.
MARINE ONE - C Maher & D Eustace
First Up : 1st by 2.75L ($1.35 BSP)
Blackbook comments : MARINE ONE has always shown talent at the jump outs as a 2yo but that didn’t exactly translate to race day. Now with Maher and Eustace, the now 3yo colt was a super winner of Heat 7 on Sep 15 where he was way too speedy and won by several lengths. Only his first jump out back and this is what he usually does at the jump outs, but the stable change might really bring him on and we’re happy to follow him. Hopefully contests an easier maiden first up to get that confidence up.
MORNINGTON GLORY - M Laurie
First Up : 1st by 3.75L ($1.71 BSP)
Blackbook comments : MORNINGTON GLORY is smart. We thought he closed really well in his official trial on Aug 9 despite sitting off the speed and running into trouble in the straight. He had no room to go at all before coming wide, being asked to respond and responding superbly to close really well, similar to Daily Bugle who followed him. The 3yo colt then backed that up with a super win in Heat 9 on Aug 17 where he took up the lead and was just too good in recording a several length win in slick time. He is a half-brother to the stallion Needs Further and is out of the mare Crowned Glory who was 2nd in the Golden Slipper herself. Very keen for him to make his debut on the back of these jump outs and that breeding.
SOKKIES - K Aldous
First Up : 1st by 0.3L ($113.30 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Putting a watch on SOKKIES. The 4yo gelding was 2nd on Aug 23 and also 2nd in Heat 2 on Aug 31 to the 74-rated 5yo Prince Of Helena. Was $101 on debut back in June and was poor but the trial after was okay before the 10-week let up and returning for these two jump out 2nd’s. Not a stack of confidence, just a watch and a small spec at a big price.
SUPER THIEF - B & JD Hayes
First Up : 1st by 3.25L ($1.51 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Of the three that crossed the line together in Heat 8 on Aug 27, the maiden SUPER THIEF (white) didn’t look out of place alongside the more experienced Zou Dancer and Maybe The Best. Had a quiet synthetic jump out on Aug 20 and looks to be travelling well ahead of her return as a 3yo.
BETA BITE - M Croston & G Gilmour
First Up : 1st by 0.5L ($30.65 BSP)
Blackbook comments : For an 11-start maiden, BETA BITE closed really well over the top to win Heat 4 on Aug 19. The 5yo was hard ridden and shown the whip, but he did close well from the back. He’ll be a big price in a maiden first up, worth a small low-confidence spec on the back of this.
ISLAND EDITION - P Stokes
First Up : 1st by 4.75L ($3.20 BSP)
Blackbook comments : If we’re following Tobaysure, we have to also follow #8 ISLAND EDITION who was 3rd in Heat 4 on Aug 5 and probably just as quietly ridden but finished a bit further back. His Jul 20 jump out when going past Lightsaber was also impressive and he too looks like he was some nice closing speed.
RED HAWK - T & C McEvoy
First Up : 1st by 6.0L ($1.54 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Of the 2yo’s, RED HAWK was a nice winner of Heat 5 on Jan 22 (light blue) in front of Ingratiating and clocked the fastest 800m heat of the entire day!
RED HAWK showed a stack of gate speed to lead them in Heat 3 on Jul 16 and then showed a great turn of foot to accelerate away and win by a couple of lengths. One of those horses he accelerated away from was impressive 2yo winner Danny's St Darci. First jump out for this 2yo colt and although it was the slowest time for the day, still a nice bit of work and one to follow.
A $260k purchase at the Inglis Classic Yearling sales, RED HAWK was mentioned after his Jul 16 win despite it being the slowest time of the day. The now-3yo colt showed that speed again to lead from start to finish in Heat 8 on Aug 3 for a big win in the end but this time clocking the second fastest time of the day (past the line he was in front by a long way). He will be leading or at least on speed on debut where we expect him to be very competitive. He looks to have a bit of talented and if he debuts at Ballarat no the synthetic, the McEvoy stable go to another level.
TRINITY'S REWARD - B McGrath
First Up : 1st by 0.8L ($41.89 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 1.2L ($8.05 BSP)
Blackbook comments : TRINITY’S REWARD is a 5 start maiden without a career placing, but you wouldn’t know that with the way she closed over the top of Ping Ping and Frenzy Lune in Heat 10 on Jul 19 in her first jump out for her new Brian McGrath stable. She jumped beautifully with the jockey electing to take a sit in behind the speed before she peeled out in the straight, was given a push and closed well over the top. Will note she won a jump out on Mar 31 when she was still with Cameron Templeton before then running 8th of 9 at $81, so will have to be careful. Think she will open big odds though and this was encouraging - hopefully another bit of work, but if not she’ll be a small bet at a big price first up.
MARIMENKO - M, W & J Hawkes
Blackbook comments : He’s a 5yo with only 1 career start that was a 13th in Sha Tin back in 2020, but MARIMENKO looks as though he moves quite well. He was given a quiet time in Heat 3 on Aug 2 (orange), where he went back before coming wide and just cruising to the line as he made good ground in the straight and past the line. This follows nice jump outs on Jul 16 and especially on Jul 23 amongst good horses in Aysar, Harmony Nation, and Need New Friends with the winner (Adki) since winning a BM58. Must follow for his Australian debut.
DEEL BLASTER - M Laurie
First Up : 3rd by 4.25L ($4.39 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 4.0L ($3.15 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Was a fan of DEEL BLASTER last preparation as a colt, featuring in our review where we noted he was a half-brother to Bumper Blast. He was unlucky on debut before going to QLD where he wasn’t anything special. He returns to VIC now as a gelding and after his ‘track gallop’ jump out on Jun 24, his win on Heat 12 on Jul 7 was super and the bit of work we wanted to see to be confident he’s return in good order. Following, think he is better than maiden grade at the very least.
DECENT RAINE - C Maher & D Eustace
First Up : 1st by 5.0L ($2.24 BSP)
Blackbook comments : With the undefeated La Rocque 4L back in 2nd, DECENT RAINE has put in a super performance to win Heat 10 on Jul 7. She jumped beautifully here, took up the lead and then gave a kick in the straight to show her class. Mingora was too good for her late in a Jun 22 jump out, with that runner starting $2 on debut but finishing a disappointing 6th. She looked super and can win a maiden first up.
ROYAL DRESS - T & C McEvoy
First Up : 1st by 1.3L ($2.47 BSP)
Blackbook comments : We wanted to follow ROYAL DRESS after finishing 2nd on Jun 16 to Come On Eileen who has subsequently ran a 1.8L 3rd in a maiden at $11. The filly was given a little freshen up, returning in Heat 1 on Jul 7 where she jumped beautifully to lead along the rail and never looked like getting beat. As mentioned previously, she’s by I Am Invincible being a full-sister to Chianti and a half-sister Sweet Rockette (Group 3 placed) and certainly think she has some talent. Keen to follow her into a debut.
COLSRIDGE - A Pace
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($2.81 BSP)
Blackbook comments : In the clear fastest time of the morning, COLSRIDGE just got the better of Zoutons late to win Heat 1 on Jun 22 with Just Folk in 3rd. We had this gelding in the BlackBook from his previous prep where he also jumped out well prior to a 2L 3rd on debut. Only his first jump out back here, one for the watch list but looks to be in good order.
COOLSHOT - J McArdle
First Up : 1st by 5.75L ($3.46 BSP)
Blackbook comments : COOLSHOT an easy pick for performer of the day (and maybe even the week). He bolted in to win Heat 9 on Jul 14 by lengths and ran a really good time - he’s clocked 1:07.02s, which is the third fastest time of the day by 0,25s, but he’s ran this on a deteriorating track where the times got considerably slower later in the day (besides his). His Jun 30 was also super and he’s a must follow into his debut - he has talent.
HAI SUN - M Freedman
First Up : 1st by 1.5L ($22.40 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Was a fan of HAI SUN throughout her first preparation, but she couldn’t quite get the maiden out of the way despite having three nice runs when finishing 4th, 2nd and 3rd. Returning to win Heat 9 on Jun 2 (green), this filly looks will be looking to get that maiden out of the way. In this jump out, she sat in behind the leaders before getting a nice easy run up the rail. Expect her to have another jump out before resuming.
BRAZEN BULLY - A & S Freedman
First Up : 1st by 3.2L ($2.06 BSP)
Blackbook comments : BRAZEN BULLY backed up his Apr 30 jump out with a with some nice closing speed to finish 2nd in Heat 4 on May 14 (red with white sleeves) alongside some more experienced runners in Aramayo and Whittington Stone. Don’t like how he was a beaten $2 favourite last start, but he was spelled after this so maybe he wasnt quite right. Expecting him to be improved this preparation.
MY BOY BIRMINGHAM - T & C McEvoy
First Up : 1st by 3.0L ($3.57 BSP)
Blackbook comments : MY BOY BIRMINGHAM has strung together two nice jump outs in a row now. Following a well held 3rd on May 3, the 3yo gelding took out Heat 4 on May 13 in impressive fashion. He sat on speed (leading) but 3-deep throughout before coming down the middle of the track under a strong hold. He’s one worth following in.
MY BOY BIRMINGHAM was mentioned previously in our review, winning Heat 3 by a big margin in nice time for the day but he was hard ridden and shown the stick. This will really bring him on for his debut and he looked to handle the Heavy track well enough. Think he goes very close on debut.
MAYBE THE BEST - A & S Freedman
First Up : 1st by 3.2L ($1.65 BSP)
Blackbook comments : MAYBE THE BEST showed a really nice acceleration at multiple stages throughout Heat 5 on Apr 26 (red with white sleeves), getting up to finish 2nd to the smart Titan Blinders. The worry is the starts of this filly, being slowly away in a Apr 14 jump out as well as this heat. This heat in particular though, she settled last on the rail and got her way through traffic before attacking the line late and sprinting away from a couple of other handy ones. She was in front past the line too… handy bit of work for an un-raced 3yo filly. A $200k Easter Yearling purchase in 2019, these were very encouraging jump outs despite the tardy starts.
CHUCKANEV - R Symons
First Up : 1st by 2.8L ($2.00 BSP)
Sold to Honk Kong.
Blackbook comments : We were a fan of CHUCKANEV prior to his debut back in November 2020 and he ran well without winning to finish 2nd over 1100m while gapping 3rd by close to 3L. He ran the fastest L800/600/400/200m of the entire meeting with a L600m rated 1.8L above Benchmark to show he has some talent. In his first jump out back, he went stride for stride with Annemiek in Heat 2 on Mar 30 (yellow) in nice time. He can (and should) break his maiden this upcoming preparation.
ALL STARDOM - J Hunter
First Up : 1st by 3.2L ($2.14 BSP)
Blackbook comments : ALL STARDOM wasn’t up to Group 3 level and then was a forgive in his last run before a spell when slow out, he’s better than that. Given time, he returned to win Heat 10 comfortably in the end and will give a BM58/BM64 a good go first up this preparation. His maiden win at Caulfield at Caulfield ahead of South Parade reads well now, with that runner recently winning 3 in a row at BM58, BM64 and BM64 level.
JUST MALCOLM - W Wood
First Up : 1st by 2.2L ($1.66 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Ignoring his slow recovery last start at Caulfield, JUST MALCOLM was unlucky not to break the maiden in his first two career runs when 3rd and 2nd. In particular, his second up 0.75L 2nd to It’sourtime (now Group 2 and Group 3 placed) where 3rd was All Stardom (won next start at Caulfield) where they gapped 4th by 5L. Returning to the jump outs after an 11-week let up, the 3yo gelding took out Heat 3 on Mar 31 (orange) quite well in the end, out sprinting Without Excuse and Kamien late and clocking the fastest 800m time of the day. Sale has a meeting on Wednesday April 7, he probably resumes there and will be hard to beat in a maiden.
TRANSPLANT - T & C McEvoy
First Up : 1st by 6.0L ($1.10 BSP)
Blackbook comments : TRANSPLANT looked super in Heat 4 on Mar 10 (green with white sleeves), finishing 2nd to stablemate The Krone who goes alright. This 3yo filly has only had the 1 career run, a 3.2L 5th to Forever Free in a Listed race at Morphetville with some nice form around her. In her first jump out back this preparation, John Allen had her wide throughout just off the pace but she still travelled beautifully and looked to have a lot to offer late. Plenty under the hood it seemed, keen to see how she goes this prep.
RIGEL STAR - T Dabernig & B Hayes
First Up : 1st by 2.5L ($4.45 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Nice return for DIVINE DIOSA, taking out Heat 2 on Mar 12 a good 3-4L ahead of the likes of Missile Mantra (2nd) and Valanquenta (4th). The maiden, RIGEL STAR (white), was 3rd in between those gallopers and arguably looked the better of the three, travelling very wide throughout but still hitting the line under his own steam. He was immediately spelled after a reasonably disappointing debut back in October 2020, returning last week on Mar 5 (yellow) when 3rd and 1L behind impressive maiden winner Maid Of Iron but looking significantly better as he went to the line under no riding. He’s returned in super order and keen to follow him into his second career preparation.
MORE SECRETS - M, W & J Hawkes
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($2.22 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 0.1L ($5.29 BSP)
Blackbook comments : MORE SECRETS is one we must follow. A half-sister to multiple-Group winner Amangiri, this un-raced 3yo filly looked to match motors with Thousand Wishes and Bomber’s Kiss as she crossed the line in Heat 4 on Mar 19 (orange). She may of had a softish run up the inside, but her best work was past the line where she more than held her own late and looked to have a bit to offer had Craig Williams of asked for an effort. Watch for another jump out and also watch for if Craig sticks for debut.
MICHIGAN - M Moroney
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($2.57 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 0.8L ($2.06 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Liked MICHIGAN’s return jump out on Feb 26 (pink) where he was caught on the fence and had no room to move but was travelling beautiful. The winner Heroic Chief has since ran 2nd to a smart one in Litchfield County. Loved his jump out again in Heat 5 on Mar 12 (pink), where he again dropped back to last and made a run up the fence but this time managed to get a split when coming off the fence in the straight where he then really hit the line hard with Sweet Karolina. Like his form as well with two 2nd’s, one to Awesome Storm (with subsequent winners behind) and one to Nicolini Vito (won a BM64 next start). He should be breaking the maiden very soon.
ALWAYS IN MOMENT - M Kent
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($3.13 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Going to the line in 2nd place just behind Liqueuro (who’s undefeated from 2 starts) and in front of Mr Roger, ALWAYS IN MOMENT didn’t look out of place over the 1000m in Heat 9 on Feb 22 (black) and looks to have overcome the irregular heart rhythm she pulled up with in her only career run (when a $3.10 favourite). She looked to really salvage the line here and following an okay Jan 25 jump out, she’ll be looking to show why she was a $220k purchase with a bold showing first up. We’ll want to be following.
SWEET SIXTEEN - P & P Snowden
First Up : 1st by 2.5L ($1.88 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 0.8L ($2.36 BSP)
Blackbook comments : ESTORIL PARK wanted to get it over and done with early in Heat 2 on Mar 26, streaming to a big lead early and over-racing as a result. She held on to win but looked to be tiring late. Running over the top of her (and the likes of Celestial Sol, Dirty Deeds and Make Mine Hennessy) past the line after taking a sit for much of the heat was SWEET SIXTEEN (red). She was doing her best work late coming down the middle of the track, especially past the line with the ears pricked. She struggled to win in her first career prep but following another hard held jump out on Mar 12 just behind Sticking Point and Nerve Not Verve, the $310k daughter of Sebring looks primed to go close this time in.
FIVE STAR DECANTER - M Laurie
First Up : 1st by 2.2L ($1.51 BSP)
Blackbook comments : FIVE STAR DECANTER looks like he might have some talent and a turn of foot. He travelled wide in a 600m Dec 23 jump out when 3rd and then was 4th in a 1000m Jan 6 jump out after going back to last and hitting the line under no jockey pressure at all. He was just as good in Heat 4 on Feb 24 (black and yellow) when again settling off the speed before coming wide a nice turn of foot to make up several lengths and only just miss on the line to finish a close 2nd. His mum raced from 1400m to 2000m so expect this gelding to be no different. Definitely one we want to put in the blackbook and follow.
LITCHFIELD COUNTY - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($1.55 BSP)
Blackbook comments : LITCHFIELD COUNTY looked to have some talent when leading the whole way to win Heat 2 on Feb 12 (yellow). He led the whole way on debut on a Soft6 track but was no match late, being ran over the top to finish 2nd. He won this heat under no pressure and obviously has some talent, having started $2.30 on debut. He is a full-brother to Sayumi, who has some talent & this colt looks to be the same.
LITCHFIELD COUNTY was a blackbooked after a Feb 12 jump out and strengthened his credentials as a must watch and follow first up when finishing 2nd in Heat 7 on Feb 23 (pink) to South Parade who had the benefit of two runs this preparation including being a beaten $1.65 favourite last start. Expect him to go well first up.
FRENZY LUNE - G Hayes
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($36.91 BSP)
Blackbook comments : FRENZY LUNE travelled beautifully along the fence in Heat 9 on Feb 15 (orange) and then showed a nice kick late to win ahead of some okay gallopers in Fast ’n’ Deep, Dogmatic and Finesse Tess. The 47.11s time was the second quickest 800m heat of the morning too, so she’s done so in good time after travelling quietly out the back in her first jump out on Feb 1. One to watch, expect (and would want) a double digit price.
MARABI - C Maher & D Eustace
First Up : 1st by 6.0L ($2.47 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 7.0L ($1.20 BSP)
Blackbook comments : A half-sister to Aristia, MARABI was an impressive winner of Heat 14 on Jan 12 (light blue) in her first jump out. Yet to race as a 4yo, but she comes from a very handy family that includes several multiple-time winners so if she is anything like her siblings, she will win some races. She’s one we must follow.
Highlighted in a Jan 12 jump out, Aristia’s half-sister in MARABI put in an eye-catching 2nd in Heat 3 on Jan 25 (light blue) over 1000m. She closed super from the back half of the field under no pressure from the jockey. Super bit of work and very keen to follow her.
HARMONY NATION - A Alexander
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($3.05 BSP)
Blackbook comments : HARMONY NATION was completely untested on debut over 1354m behind Cambourne, sitting on the fence and held up for clear running throughout the entire race and straight. The son of Not A Single Doubt started $5.50 that day and is quite well bred, being a $800k purchase and a half-brother to Sassy ’n’ Smart (Group 2 placed over 1200m in NZ). In his jump out return in Heat 4 on Jan 5 (blue), he settled to the rear again before coming up the middle and looking like he could’ve put lengths on the field in a matter of strides. He looks like he has a bit of talent…
OXLEY ROAD - P Moody
First Up : 1st by 1.5L ($2.67 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 1.8L ($2.60 BSP) *Group 3
Blackbook comments : OXLEY ROAD beat home Swan Cap in an Oct 28 jump out, that runner has since ran 2nd, 3rd and 3rd in maiden’s. The 3yo colt hasn’t been since until he won Heat 11 on Jan 6 (red) very impressively when leading from start to finish with the nice debut winner in Galaxy Keeper finishing 2nd - they ran the second fastest time of the day easily. He is very well bred, being a full-brother to Exceedance and on the back of these jump outs, he’s a must follow. Looks a smart colt.
CHARMING ADELINE - R Coombes
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($6.65 BSP)
Blackbook comments : She had the race fitness edge, but CHARMING ADELINE was a very impressive winner over 600m of Heat 8 on Jan 20 (green) and really shouldn’t be a maiden for too much longer. If she finds a country maiden and draw’s low, definitely got to be mindful of her as she should go close.
THE BILLIONAIRE - A & S Freedman
First Up : 1st by 2.5L ($1.45 BSP)
Blackbook comments : THE BILLIONAIRE has always promised to be a good horse, but didn’t deliver as a 2yo. He looks to have returned in good order as a 3yo though, finishing 2nd on Jan 5 before taking out Heat 2 on Jan 15 (red) impressively. It looks like he has returned gelded, which could be the key to him switching on and deliver on that talent he has shown in jump outs. Looks to need to be on speed or leading, so look for a low draw first up.
WHOZYADEELER - T Gollan
First Up : 1st by 5.2L ($4.64 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 3.0L ($1.46 BSP)
Blackbook comments : WHOZYADEELER was 2nd to Dana Point in that Jun 30 jump out we mention above. This un-raced 3yo gelding was in a different heat today and as a result won, taking out Heat 10 on Jul 15 along the fence under light riding. The full-brother of multiple-winner Gem Dealer ($82k earnings) was a $150k MM Yearling purchase and looks to have a bit of ability. Watching.
ARIGATO - S Nichols
First Up : 1st by 1.8L ($13.50 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 1.8L ($7.90 BSP)
Blackbook comments : ARIGATO pulled up lame at her last start, but looked very comfortable throughout Heat 4 on Jan 6 (green) when finishing a very close 3rd to Dynamic Duo and Inside Edge but having the better of recent maiden winner Storming The Seas. Very noticeable gear absence of her blinkers so worth keeping an eye out for these as she had them on for her last two starts but she seems to go better without them. Nice return and one we want to follow into a 1200/1400m BM58.
JIGSAW - C Alderson
First Up : 1st by 3.2L ($2.75 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Well this was a very impressive win by JIGSAW, taking out Heat 1 on Dec 15 (white with blue sleeves) over 1000m by 8L in 58.88s. This was the clear fastest time of the day and he did so with ease under the guidance of Michael Walker. He jumped straight to the front and took the turn really well to put up several lengths on the field and then being eased down late. Having won a jump out on Dec 7 over 800m, this 2yo colt looks to be flying and one we must follow into his debut.
RETROVAILLES - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 3.2L ($3.00 BSP)
Blackbook comments : RETROVAILLES first caught the eye on Nov 16 when missing the kick by a long way but still managed to finish only 2-3L off KURAMAE. She then flew home out wide in a Nov 24 to win impressively, backing it up with another nice win in Heat 2 on Dec 10 (yellow). This filly looks to have some talent and a fair turn of foot. Big fan.
DUKE OF NEWORLEANS - M Laurie
First Up : 1st by 8.0L ($1.71 BSP)
Blackbook comments : DUKE OF NEWORLEANS romped him in a 700m jump out on Nov 25 and proved that it was no fluke when winning Heat 9 on Dec 9 (purple and red sleeves) in very impressive fashion. The 3yo gelding jumped clearly the best, took up the lead and travelled well throughout. Given an ever so slight push to get around the bend, he then finished under a strong hold with 2nd and 3rd off the bit chasing. Impressive jump outs.
KEV'S GIRL - A Chambers
First Up : 1st by 1.8L ($4.31 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Super jump out by KEV’S GIRL, leading from start to finish in Heat 10 on Nov 4 (blue) to defeat FABIAN’S SPIRIT (who was 2nd in a BM64 just over a month ago) and LOVE IN THE CITY (who was race fit having raced on Nov 2). The un-raced 3yo daughter of STAR WITNESS showed a ton of speed to take up the lead along the rail, getting home in 47.4s which was in the quickest couple of jump outs on the day similar to TAVISAN earlier. She won under very minimal riding in an impressive bit of work.
EL SALTO - B Stanley
First Up : 1st by 2.8L ($3.16 BSP)
Blackbook comments : He has had plenty of jump outs now, but this was probably the most impressive for EL SALTO. The 3yo gelding took out Heat 8 on Nov 6 over 1000m in a slick time of 59.78s, the quickest of the 1000m heats that day and certainly above average. This follows quietly ridden jump outs when 3rd on Oct 14 and 2nd on Oct 26. He can’t be far away now you’d think…
LUCKY SHAM - M Freedman
Second Up : 1st by 3.5L ($1.80 BSP)
Blackbook comments : She was first past the line on debut but doesn’t have a win due to protest… LUCKY SHAM was back to the jump outs and won Heat 5 on Nov 23 (green) impressively albeit in slow time for the day - she was asked for no effort at all. She had jumped out well prior to the debut when running 3rd to COURT DEEP and OVERKILL on Sep 22, so she has some talent and now we get to see her in a maiden again. Keen to follow.
WINSUM - K & K Keys
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($1.59 BSP)
Blackbook comments : WINSUM was a big spruik horse prior to his debut in the Group 3 Blue Diamond prelude, and he was far from disgraced when finishing 3L off them in 7th. Those ahead of him included talented runner’s HANSEATIC, RULERSHIP, TAGALOA, GLENFIDDICH and TANKER. He was put away after this run, returning in Heat 6 on Nov 16 (pink) in the same fashion he did as a 2yo, winning by a good margin in super slick time (fastest of the day over 800m). No doubting he has talent.
KURABUI - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 2.5L ($4.00 BSP)
Blackbook comments : KURABUI (NZ) was slow out in Heat 10 on Nov 10 (pink), dropping back to a clear last. The un-raced 4yo mare was quietly ridden at the rear of the field for a majority of the jump out, before being asked for an effort late and flying past the rest of the field to display a super turn of foot. The daughter of PROISIR will get over a distance, so the 800m is certainly short of her best and puts some more strength on this work. She was beaten for pace in a Nov 4 jump out. Oh, she’s also the half sister to SURPRISE BABY…
HERE TO SHOCK - B Stanley
First Up : 3rd by 2.5L ($31.23 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 1.8L ($32.00 BSP)
Third Up : 1st by 4.0L ($2.06 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Stepping out to the 1200m in Heat 7 on Oct 26 (white & black sleeves), HERE TO SHOCK again impressed and is a must watch first up. Will be better over a bit of distance so might be one we following deeper into the debut prep, especially being by Shocking from a Lonhro mare. Have loved his jump outs though.
STOICAL - P & P Snowden
First Up : 1st by 3.3L ($2.58 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Potentially gelded, STOICAL showed his talent to lead and win along the fence in Heat 10 on Oct 22 (red/white). He was under a strong hold for much of the heat and looked strong through the line. Only his first jump out so certainly keeping a close eye on him.
MOUNT MITTY - B Stanley
First Up : 1st by 4.0L ($4.78 BSP)
Blackbook comments : MOUNT MITTY a very impressive winner of Heat 3 on Oct 26 (white) over the 900m following on from a quiet Oct 14 jump out. The 4yo gelding had the 63-rated Boss Coni covered easily in this heat and it certainly won’t surprise to see him go on with it after an impressive second career prep that resulted in two wins from the four starts. Expect a BM64 first up.
LOVIN' LAUGHS - M Sell
First Up : 1st by 4.25L ($3.50 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 0.2L ($7.72 BSP)
Blackbook comments : LOVIN’ LAUGHS won a Bendigo jump out Mar 19 nicely but hasn’t been since since. Returning in Heat 4 on Oct 5 (red), the un-raced 4yo gelding again looked impressive winning. He sat on the outside of the leader, was given a push a couple of times in the straight and responded each time by edging forward. It looked to be a nice time for the day too, with the 800m being ran in 49.5s (hand-timed). Watching for a second jump out.
SHELBY COBRA - M Moroney
Second Up : 1st by 3.5L ($1.87 BSP)
Third Up : 1st by 1.0L ($3.42 BSP) in a Listed race.
Blackbook comments : SHELBY COBRA with probably the best performance despite the slow overall time. The 3yo gelding finished 2nd in Heat 11 (pink) on Sep 11 when slow out, overracing in the middle stages when asked to take a sit but then came wide around the field and easily took over the leaders with the 66-rated Able Engine in a matter of strides before being eased back late. He did much of the same in an Apr 24 jump out behind Miss Bosetti and Ourconi (both subsequent winners) while he didn’t have much room at all when quietly ridden along the rail in a more recent Aug 28 jump out. The $130k purchase looks like he has some talent and the Toronado’s are travelling well.
OUTFLANK - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 1.8L ($5.33 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Again, OUTFLANK (yellow) was a top performer at the jump outs and is a must watch first up. In Heat 4 on Sep 28 she took up the lead with recent maiden winner Early Plea (who had a clear fitness edge), where they went on to beat the rest of the field by a good 3-4L with the 85-rated Savaheat in 3rd. They clocked 50.20s over the 900m, the only time under 51s and the clear fastest of the day. Following jump outs on Sep 15, May 5 and Apr 28, she is absolutely flying on the track and if she finds a country maiden, she will win first up.
AMURI - T & C McEvoy
Second Up : 1st by 6.2L ($3.78 BSP)
Blackbook comments : The 3yo Zoustar filly AMURI travelled in restricted room early in Heat 17 on Aug 21 with the jockey restraining her for much of the back straight. She was shuffled back but managed to find some room along the fence in the straight and showed a nice natural turn of speed to come up and take the lead and win. Have no doubt if she was allowed to jump and run she would’ve won by more in better time. Only her first jump out too so encouraging signs early.
ALFA ORO (NZ) - M Laurie
First Up : 2nd by 2.0L ($3.05 BSP)
*went on to win his next 5 starts, including 3 metro wins.
Blackbook comments : The now 4yo gelding was impressive in his 2yo campaign before suffering an injury, winning a maiden comfortably by 6L and then finishing 2nd to Leonardo Da Hinchi (who went on to win a G2 and contest the G1 Guineas). He had a set of three jump outs on Nov 6 (650m in 32.59s), Nov 20 (750m in 46.92s) and Dec 5 (950m in 54.40s) before a spell and returning for jump outs on Mar 18 (47.84s) and Mar 25 (47.03s). Have a very high opinion of this gelding.
SWATS THAT - L & T Corstens
First Up : 2nd by 0.8L ($6.78 BSP) in a Listed race.
Second Up : 1st by 2.0L ($3.65 BSP) in a Group 3.
Third Up : 1st by 0.8L ($3.10 BSP) in a Group 3.
Fourth Up : 2nd by 1.8L ($7.94 BSP) in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Blackbook comments : SWATS THAT is jumping out like a very good filly. She took out Heat 9 on Aug 28 under a very strong hold following on from her Jul 31 and Aug 10 jump outs. Think this is a group class filly and will feature in some very nice races this spring.
RAINBIEL - A Chibnall
First Up : 1st by 1.8L ($5.44 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 2.8L ($2.04 BSP)
Blackbook comments : RAINBIEL went to the line with superior horses in Rubisaki and Kaarchi in Heat 2 on Aug 17. Two placings from two career runs to date, this filly looks to have come back in good order for her 3yo campaign after another quiet Jul 28 jump out.
GENERAL BEAU - M Ellerton & S Zahra
First Up : 1st by 2.2L ($2.92 BSP)
Blackbook comments : The most impressive of the 2yo trials was GENERAL BEAU (orange/white & black sleeves) taking out Heat 2 on Sep 15 up the straight. The 2yo Brazen Beau looked comfortable and was well held in comparison to all the other 2yo’s in either heats. We saw him finish a close 2nd in a Sep 4 jump out as well to suggest that this could be a handy early 2yo…
ALOVELYBROWNHORSE - G Eurell
Second Up : 1st by 0.2L ($20.08 BSP)
Blackbook comments : ALOVELYBROWNHORSE looks like she has a bit of closing speed. The 4yo mare closed well from the back in an Aug 3 jump out on Vancouver Lad (came out and won a MDN) and also in Heat 7 (49.01s) on Aug 17 when ridden with a little bit of urgency to come through the middle and run past Moi Choux. She is a full-sister to the handy metro winner Red Heeler, so she might appreciate some distance but certainly looks like she has some ability.
PRETTY ROSSA - M Laurie
First Up : 1st by 2.5L ($8.40 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Loved the win of PRETTY ROSSA in Heat 11 on Sep 2. The flashy filly sat just behind the leaders before coming up the inside in the straight to win, really extending when she was given a reminder to suggest she has some sort of turn of foot. She was a very close 2nd on Aug 12 as well as 6th on Aug 20 at Sandown and if we go back to her first couple of jump outs, she had the Governor Landy covered on May 6. She’s had plenty of education and has put in some nice work to suggest she’ll be competitive early in her career.
FOREVER FREE - M Ellerton & S Zahra
First Up : 1st by 0.8L ($2.35 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 0.3L ($3.21 BSP)
Third Up : 1st by 1.1L ($5.77 BSP) in the AAMI Queen Adelaide Stakes (Listed) at Morphetville.
Blackbook comments : Thought the most impressive 2yo of the day was this Exceed And Excel filly in Heat 4 (47.96s) on Mar 6. She showed good gate speed to zip to the front early and travelled under a hold to the line when winning by 1-2L. She had the ears pricked today after also jumping out well on Feb 28 (48.11s) when 2nd to Geist who was 3rd in a G2 only 3 weeks earlier. A $300k purchase from the 2018 Inglis Easter Yearling Sales, this filly looks above average.
NIGHT RAID - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 7.2L ($1.24 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 0.3L ($3.81 BSP) in the $140k Atlantic Jewel (Listed) at Moonee Valley.
Blackbook comments : She was fourth on debut at Flemington ($41 SP) to the subsequent Group 3 winner A Beautiful Night, subsequently spelled and now this 3yo filly has returned super to the jump outs. Following on from a Jul 21 win, the 2yo filly won Heat 4 (47.86s) on Jul 28 as well in super time when leading from start to finish. Certainly one to watch first up as a 3yo, expecting her to have spring targets.
BLESS HER - S Eden
First Up : 1st by 4.0L ($3.16 BSP)
*went on to win her next 4x races before placing in a Group 3.
Blackbook comments : A nice return from the 3yo daughter of Street Boss in Heat 5 (48.9s) on Apr 14 (green/blue silks). Her first preparation was quite good as she placed 3 times from 4 starts as well as a 4th. She nearly broke maiden status at her second start, finishing 2nd by 0.1L and finishing in front of Megamea. She then ran behind Tycoon Bella and Excelman, what now transpires as good form. Her jump out was solid today, as she made up plenty of ground in the final stages whilst hardly being asked for an effort. If placed in a suitable maiden first up, she will be winning.
SAVANNAH CLOUD (NZ) - P Stokes
First Up : 1st by 5.5L ($2.32 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Nice return to the jump outs for SAVANNAH CLOUD in Heat 5 on Sep 2 who we highlighted prior to his debut as one to follow into the spring. His first two career runs were super and with the breeding of being by Savabeel (G1 winnner at 2000m) from an O'Reilly mare who was a G3 winner herself over 2400m while holding a nomination for the cox plate, this colt is certainly one we are keen to hopefully go towards a derby.
TYDEUS - L Smith
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($2.08 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 1.8L ($5.60 BSP)
Blackbook comments : This colt was 2nd to Corner Pocket (since 2nd on debut) in a Jun 3 (yellow) jump out and looked more comfortable in the run. The 3yo looked super when winning Heat 8 on Aug 10 by a huge margin to suggest he is above average. Another nice Lindsey Smith 3yo after also winning a May 27 jump out and going to the line alongside Mystery Shot and Corner Pocket (again) in a May 20 jump out.
RINGFORT - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 0.8L ($17.00 BSP)
Blackbook comments : RINGFORT cruised to the win in Heat 5 (50.11s) on Aug 18 and looked very comfortable in doing so, albeit in the slowest time of the day. The 4yo mare was a $100k purchase back in 2018, but has been very disappointing in 3 career runs to date. Only her first jump out this prep so watch for a second one to see if she has returned in better order.
Had her second jump out on Aug 25, finishing 2nd to the 61-rated Black Opal in the second quickest of 9x 800m heats.
BELLA NIPOTINA - T Dabernig & B Hayes
First Up : 1st by 2.0L ($28.00 BSP)
Blackbook comments : This 3yo filly won a jump out on Jun 24 in good time and has backed that up with a big win in Heat 6 (48.31s) on Jul 31. Her time was only 0.01s off the quickest of the day over the big 16x jump outs. She’s a stakes performed 2yo that is still a maiden and looks to be gearing up for a spring prep.
BERMADEZ (NZ) - M Moroney
First Up : 1st by 5.2L ($2.13 BSP)
Blackbook comments : We have been following this gelding since some super jump outs under his breeding Tavistock x Pikea on Dec 27 and especially on Jan 17 (pink silks) where he was slowly away, settling last but powering to and through the line. He was a massive eye-catcher and we have been waiting since. We haven’t seen him for a while until a Jul 24 jump out (pink silks) when going to the line with Hard Landing (since 1st at Moonee Valley) and again did his best work past the line. He is city class.
BAROCHA - C Douglas
First Up : 1st by 5.0L ($1.92 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 2.5L ($1.49 BSP)
*since sold to HK.
Blackbook comments : This gelding was 2nd to the smart 79-rated Riddle Me That in a Jul 15 jump out over 600m and has now backed that up with a very nice win in Heat 1 (1:06.72s) on Jul 29 over the 1000m this time when running over the top of the very smart Group-1 winner Princess Jenni. The current 3yo gelding was only a $12k purchase from the 2018 Inglis Yearling Sales and based on the jump outs, looks like he’ll make up that value pretty quickly…
GYPSY CHOICE - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 3.8L ($2.51 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Very good win by this 3yo filly in Heat 6 (47.24s) on Jul 28, clocking the quickest time of the 7x 800m heats of the morning too. Led them up and travelled super through the line, continuing to extend late. She was disappointing on debut and was spelled straight after to return and be 2nd to Night Raid in that Jul 21 jump out. Very promising jump out here and one to watch after starting $20 on debut and being iffy.
JENNI’S RAINBOW - D Brideoake
First Up : 1st by 3.0L ($3.80 BSP)
Blackbook comments : We identified her as one to watch after finishing well on Jul 8 when she was 2nd to Remastered with Testa Boom behind. This time in, the 2yo More Than Ready Filly took out Heat 5 (58.30s) on Jul 22 quite comfortably to put together two nice synthetic trials in a row and suggest she has some ability. The $75k Inglis Melbourne Premier purchase will be looking for a very late-season 2yo debut on a synthetic track where we will be following.
VILLA VILLEKULLA - P Payne
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($1.60 BSP)
Blackbook comments : This 4yo gelding all but won on debut when travelling wide and getting overrun by a very fast finishing (and handy) Just Folk (who will measure up too much better races). They had 2L on 3rd and 3.5L on 4th. Run probably took a bit out of him on the Heavy9, has had a freshen up and a nice jump out in Heat 3 on Jul 28 (blue silks) with his trainer Patrick Payne riding and going to the line alongside stablemate 75-rated Mount Kilcoy. He’ll go close second up.
SHOTMAKER - M Price & M Kent Jnr
First Up : 1st by 2.2L ($1.41 BSP)
Blackbook comments : This 3yo is still a maiden having competed in some very handy races including being only 4L off the Group 1 Blue Diamond in 2019. Following his Blue Diamond campaign, he was 2.4L off Super Seth in a Group 3 before being 1.4L off a Listed race and then failing in the Group 3 Guineas prelude. He’s been given a really good spell of 10 months, with the key gear change being that he is now a gelding. In his first jump out back he took out Heat 1 (48.94s) on Jul 7 against some handy horses and considering the stable obviously had a very high opinion of him as a colt, we would expect them to continue racing him in some nice races. He is still a maiden though, so hopefully we see him in a maiden first up before going onto more races in town.
JUST FOLK - J Julius
First Up : 1st by 0.2L ($22.57 BSP)
*since won a bm64 third up.
Blackbook comments : Winning Heat 7 (1:02.59s) on Jun 30 (light blue silks) over 1000m was this un-raced 3yo gelding. After being ridden out the back on Jun 4 before finishing in the placings on Jun 16, the son of Magnus stepped up to the 1000m and looked comfortable when winning under minimal jockey pressure. While there was only two 1000m heats, his time was quicker than far superior runners in Heat 6 to suggest he might have some ability. He’s a good looking horse, keep an eye out for him on debut.
A PINCH OF LUCK - M Laurie
First Up : 1st by 6.0L ($2.63 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Liked the way this 2yo filly extended late and put a space on the field in Heat 4 (57.82s) on Jul 8 in the blue silks. She’s been jumping out against the older horses with this being her third jump out this preparation. They include a 4th on Jun 17 and then a 2nd on Jun 24 where she went to the line with the 74-rated Tall Lady. The $30k daughter of Shamus Award has certainly shown enough at the jump outs to suggest she’ll be competitive first up, hopefully on a synthetic track.
MASTER MONTARO - R Laming
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($3.50 BSP)
Second Up : 1st by 3.0L ($1.67 BSP)
*since sold to HK.
Blackbook comments : We first blackbooked this 3yo gelding back before the spring from his Aug 26, Sep 9, Sep 23, Nov 18 and Dec 2 jump outs. The 3yo son of Toronado has been given time and it looks to have done him well where he finished 2nd in Heat 1 over 800m clocking 47.4s on Mar 10 (white silks). He was pushed in the jump out but will take big improvement, as it is his first jump out this preparation. The overall time was significantly faster than the others on the day, so it suggests that he has some sort of ability. He hasn’t had a start yet so there’s plenty to look forward to!
KNOWLES - J Warren
First Up : 1st by 2.2L ($3.46 BSP)
Blackbook comments : The 3yo filly was super impressive in her last run behind Moldova before her spell, running a nice last 200m split. This filly jumped out over 800m in Heat 5 on Sep 9 and was quite impressive. She was hard held and looked to find the line with ease. The best part about her is she’s still a maiden and should be winning first up. After her other impressive jump out on Aug 28 over 600m where she sat 3L behind the leader in last spot but really hit her straps towards the end, overtaking the field and finishing nicely to be in front past the line under minimal riding. Very impressive.
LATENIGHTTOUGHGUY - K Hann
First Up : 1st by 4.2L ($2.28 BSP)
*since sold to HK.
Blackbook comments : In the quickest of 12x 800m heats, this unraced 3yo Written Tycoon colt showed a ton of speed to win Heat 12 (44.93s) on Mar 3 over 800m by 6L under hands and heels. This jump out win was no fluke, having won jump outs on Jan 21 (900m – 50.24s) and Feb 14 (800m - 49.3s) in similar fashion. He is a half- brother to the stakes placed gelding, Beerz With Clint. Expect him to lead on debut so if he draws a good barrier, he’ll certainly be the one to be on.
BELLARINE BEAUTY - L & T Corstens
First Up : 1st by 2.3L ($2.28 BSP)
Blackbook comments : A nice win in Heat 7 (49.12s) on Feb 21 by this 3yo filly who looks like she has returned in very good order. Her form from her last run when 6th at Ballarat has good form lines now with 1st since winning a LR race and 2nd, 4th, 5th and 8th all breaking their maidens since. She also jumped out on Feb 7 (49.95s) just behind PEIDRA (3.5L off a G3 first up) when gapping 3rd. Expect her to break her maiden early this prep.
CHIPPEWA SQUARE (NZ) - C Maher & D Eustace
First Up : 1st by 6.0L ($2.74 BSP)
*since sold to HK.
Blackbook comments : The half-brother to Savannahlander (NZ) took out Heat 2 on Mar 31 in the quickest time of the 3x 1100m jump outs, 1:06.68s. He showed some nice gate speed to cross and take the lead along the rail and win by a good margin. He jumped out quietly behind subsequent winner Lord Kensington on Feb 20 and looks ready to debut.
MOI CHOUX (NZ) - R Laming
First Up : 1st by 3.5L ($2.23 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Another nice jump out from this 3yo son of Jimmy Choux (NZ) from Moirai in Heat 7 on Oct 28. He was well held throughout the event and looked strong through the line. Blackbooked after his Oct 14 next to Zoumanor and Aug 26 jump outs too. Keep an eye on!

Blackbook comments : We hand-timed this 3yo Not A Single Doubt filly’s jump out for 46s in Heat 7 on Feb 6 where she won by a big margin. She resumes for the new stable (previously C Waller) and comes down to Melbourne and judging from this jump out, we don’t expect her to be a maiden for long.
OCULAR - S Eden
First Up : 1st by 2.8L ($3.00 BSP)
Blackbook comments : That’s now 3 good jump outs from this 3yo Written Tycoon gelding being on Oct 28 (49.6s) behind Ironore Gine (since 1st MDN by 2L), Nov 18 (48.0s) after settling on the heels of Hard Press (2YO HCP winner) and today in Heat 13 (51.3s) in the rain. Super keen for him to make his debut if placed well.
CLIFFS OF BELAURA - J McArdle
First Up : 1st by 3.2L ($4.60 BSP)
Blackbook comments : Another nice jump out in Heat 4 on Oct 30 by the 2yo Filly by Canford Cliffs (IRE) from Belaura following on from her Oct 23 jump out where she was slow out of the gates but more than made up for it as she came wide around the turn and rounded the field up with ease to just miss in 2nd. In today’s heat she settled well to the back of the field and was being restrained for majority of the race when over-racing. Was given a push around the bend and made up some good ground. She's one to watch for her debut.
DRATINI - C Alderson
Second Up : 1st by 3.2L ($19.15 BSP)
Blackbook comments : The clear stand out performer of the jump outs was this 4yo son of ALL TOO HARD, winning Heat 12 by well over 10L in 1:01.0s, the fastest of the 1000m heats. Following from his Dec 23 and Dec 30 jump outs, he’s ready to make his Australian debut and give it an almighty shake. He’s only 57 rated, given his poor NZ form (8 starts for 1 win), so a BM58 is a possibility. Regardless, follow him into his debut.
